Texas 500 Set For November 12th Heated Battle At Speedway The November 12th Texas 500 at the Texas World Speedway is shaping up to be the most com petitive race of the year with over 60 entries having been re ceived from all three of the na tion’s stock car sanctioning bodies. One of the most heated battles in the history of automobile rac ing will take place between Rich ard Petty and Bobby Allison in the full FIA-NASCAR sanctioned event. Both Petty and Allison will be making their final bid to clinch the NASCAR Winston Cup title and take home the winner’s share of over $134,000 including race purse and point monies. Petty, one of two racing mil lionaires entered in the 500-mile classic will be seeking his fourth Grand National Championship during his 14-year career. Other drivers from the National Association for Stock Car Auto mobile Racing include David Pearson, winner of five super speedway races this season in the Woods Brother’s Mercury. Also two-time World 600 winner Bud dy Baker will be behind the wheel of the K & K Insurance Dodge along with this year’s Talladega 500 winner James Hylton in a Mercury. Top names from the United States Automobile Club will join the field making it one of the most impressive lists of drivers ever assembled for one event. A. J. Foyt who has already beaten the NASCAR boys at Day tona and Ontario this year will pilot a second Mercury from the Woods Brother’s stable. Foyt, who is also a racing millionaire has been considered by many to be the most versatile driver to ever sit behind the wheel of a race car. Joining Foyt from the US AC ranks will be Johnny Rutherford driving the Junior Dunlovey Mer cury that Ramo Stott brought in second at Talladega earlier this season. The latest entry for the Texas 500 is Ron Hutcherson, winner of last week’s Royal Triton ARCA 300 at the Texas World Speed way. The Keokuk, Iowa native is the brother of former NASCAR great, Dick Hutcherson and is currently the Automobile Racing Club of America National Cham pion. With the deadline still two weeks away, entries continue to pour in. Practice begins on Thursday, November 9th followed by two days of qualifying and the rich Texas 500 is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12th. NEW YORK (A*) _ Gaylord Perry, rangy Cleveland right hander, was named winner Tues day of the 1972 Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the Amer ican League. The 34-year-old Indian ace had a 24-16 record and an earned run average of 1.92, second to the league’s best, the 1.91 by Luis Tiant of Boston. In winning the Cy Young Award, Perry duplicated the feat of his brother, Jim, who was voted the AL’s top pitcher at Minnesota in 1970. That was the year Gaylord and Jim became the first brother combination in ma jor league history to win 20 games each. Perry narrowly edged Wilbur Wood, Chicago White Sox knuckleballer, in the vote of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He received nine first place votes from the 24-man commit tee, two from each AL city. JAY’S SABER INN Package Store Come by and let us show you our selection of fine liqi and wines. FREEMAN Associated Press Sports Writer DALLAS <A>) — Southern Methodist Coach Hayden Fry said Tuesday the ninth-ranked Texas Longhorns are “every bit as good” as their 1969 national championship team. The Mustangs meet Texas Sat urday afternoon in Austin in a crucial Southwest Conference tilt as the ’Horns try to steamroller to their fifth consecutive league title. “They have the finest offen sive line you’ll ever see in col lege football,” Fry said. “Full back Roosevelt Leaks is as good if not better than graduated Steve Worster. He’s faster than Worster.” Fry said he though Texas quarterback Alan Lowry is better than former Longhorn greats Eddie Phillips, Donnie Wiggin- ton and James Street. “Lowry runs like a fullback,” Fry said. “There’s no lost mo tion. It’s unbelievable the way he runs. He ran right by Arkan sas. You can’t arm tackle him because he’s got the strength of a fullback and he’s playing quar terback.” Asked about Texas’ passing game, Fry said, “I don’t know that we’ll ever know about their passing game. They haven’t had to use it much lately.” He said the only way the 16- point underdog Mustangs could whip Texas was for the Long horns to make mistakes and for SMU to play an exceptional game. “I think it is possible for us to beat them but Texas should and probably will go right through its schedule to the cham pionship,” Fry said. “We’ve got a chance — but that’s about all.” Fry said he still had confidence in quarterback Keith Bobo despite an off day against Texas Tech in a 17-3 loss. “I’m sold on him,” Fry said. “I think my team will get a lot better. And so will Keith.” Fry said he was mystified by the poor showing of running back Alvin Maxson against Tech. “It was his poorest game,” he said.
