By KEVIN COFFEY The A&M Fish football squad puts its 2-0 record on the line tonight when they face the Bay lor Cubs (0-2) in Baylor Stadium in Waco. Kickoff is slated for 7:30. While the Baylor varsity is try ing to shed the traditions of the past by winning some football games, the Cubs seem determined to keep up the losing habit. The Cubs have dropped games to SMU 36-6 and Texas 42-6, but Fish coach Paul Register is not over confident. He said, “The score of the Tex as game did not indicate the type of ball game it was. It could have been close but Texas got some good breaks and two quick touch downs.” Register will have worries other than Baylor. Starting halfback Melvin Howard left school and has returned to Georgia. This will force defensive back Pat Thomas to double on the offensive unit in Howard’s position. Injuries will also be a problem for the Fish. Following the two-wheeler mar athon, Joe Frasson will challenge a field of 40 of the nation’s best race drivers in hopes of taking his first checkered flag since in vading the Grand National circuit in 1969. Frasson has consistently been among the fastest qualifiers in almost every race that he has entered this season, but bad luck has eluded the 36-year-old father of three from visiting victory lane. Ironically, Frasson picked up his biggest pay-off at the Texas World Speedway in the 1971 run ning of the Texas 500 by finish ing sixth and collecting over $2,500. Activities for the final race of the Winston Cup Series start with practice on Thursday, Nov. 9, fol lowed by qualifying for the 40 starting spots on Friday and Sat urday. Sunday’s rich 500-miler is set to start at 1:00 p.m. but will still start. Defensive back Doug Wood will be replaced in the starting lineup by Jeff Helsa due to injury. Through their first two games the Fish have impressive stats. Ronnie Hubby is currently tied with Vance Kerbow for the most touchdowns during a Fish season with seven. Kerbow pulled the feat in 1969. The Fish also have a chance of breaking the record for the most yards rushing during a sea son. They curently have 460 yards and if they keep their current average they will pass the 1,092 record of the 1958 team. Register was pleased with the Fish workouts this week, saying, “Tuesday’s was the best workout of the season." The Fish will start Dale Am mons at quarterback. Leading rusher Bucky Sams is the full back and Hubby and Thomas are the halfbacks. The offensive line starts Scott Knippa and Glenn Bujnoch at tackle, Tyrone Wright and Dennis Smelser at guard with Bruce Welch at center. The Fish receivers are tight end David Greeno and split end Roy Murry. Murry will also re turn punts and kickoffs in place of the departed Howard. Defensively the Fish start Ron Garrison and Bujnoch at end, an<l| with Kent Krueger Smelser at the tackle Scott, Carl WarnkeandTf are the linebackers. Jackie Williams, Hel Charles Arndt are the backs.
