"We played aggressive and en- usiastic,” he said. “We had portunities but couldn't score len we had to. But we had the tensity necessary to play win- ng football. Ke «P )ouglas Jewelry |2 N. Main 822-3119 “We did the best job we’ve done all year, but we still need work in some areas. We are headed in the right direction.” After last week’s shakeup in the lineup, Bellard said this week’s would be kept the same. The only switch will be Mike Keese backing up tight end Homer May instead of Doug Jordan. Keese is a former split end. He also felt halfback Skip Walker would be ready to play after sit ting out last week with a hip- pointer. Numerous players received praise from Bellard as well as the entire unit. Such old reliables as center Skip Kuehn, halfback Mark Green and middle linebacker Grady Hoermann were given spe cial recognition as were newcom ers Ed Simonini, Paul Hulin and Don Dean. “Skip played an outstanding game,” he said, “it was his best ever, exceptional, and he had to block a darn fine football player (All-America candidate Don Rives). “Mark played excellent football and has for the past 10 days (since recovering from a hip- pointer). He is blocking well and running tough. “Grady did an outstanding job Saturday night. “Ed played inexperienced, but he possesses the basic things we look for in a football player. He has ability and is burning up with desire to get to the ball-carrier. He’ll be a real fine football player before he leaves here. “Paul is also burning up with that desire you look for in foot ball players. “Don has a lot of poise out THE BATTALION Wednesday, October 18, 1972 College Station, Texas Page 7 IU SCHOOL OF LAW [representative of the South- lethodist University School aw, Dallas, Texas, will be pampas 9:30 a. m. until 2 Friday, October 20, 1972 klk with interested students jt admission requirements Ifinancial assistance. A&M Water Polo Squad Successful lit Rugged Albuquerque Tournament *onderosa Specials I Friday Evening Fish Fry — $2.00 | Sunday Ntfon Lunch $2.00 i* Special Weekend Rates for Parents & Students I Call 846-5794 z/_ Ponderosa Motor Inn For the second straight week, A&M’s water polo team faced some of the top competition in the country. They returned from the Lobo Invitational Tourney at Albuquerque, N.M., with a re spectable 2-2 record. This ran the team’s season record to 13-4. The Aggies learned new moves and skills two weeks ago at the tough Northern California Tour nament but learned to play as a team in Albuquerque. Lester Hamann led all A&M scorers with 11 goals over the four games while Mike Hicks, Paul McKinzie and Wade Mat tingly led the defensive efforts for the Aggies. Sophomore Doug Meaden came into his own over the tourney and according to coach Dennis Fosdick, “could be the best water polo player to come from the state of Texas.” Steve Sonnenberg firmed his hold on a starting position while his brother Dan, and Larry Schueckler were impressive in their roles as backup men. The Aggies beat the University of New Mexico “B” unit 13-3 in the opener with Hamann scoring three goals. Colorado State hand ed A&M their first loss 7-1. Hicks played the entire game with a cut that later required 11 stitches. The Aggies lost to University of Utah 8-10 but Meaden’s out standing play almost spelled up set of the highly rated Utah club. The Aggies returned to their winning ways with a 11-10 vic tory over Colorado. Hamann scored five goals in the upset which Fosdick called “the best game we played all year.” The A&M “B” squad also went to Albuquerque and returned with much experience in gaining a 1-2 record. The Aggies face U.T.-Arling- ton in Arlington Thursday at 6 p.m. On Saturday a group of former players will return to face the Aggies in a 1 p.m. contest. The A&M freshman team will play a warm-up game at 11:30 a.m. against the College Station Swim Club. there under the circumstances. He played real well but is not the finished product yet. His execu tion will improve with experience. He handled the football and the team real well.” Defensive tackles Bill Wiebold and Boice Best were spoken high ly of, also. “They did a heckuva job,” he said. “Tech’s guards have been blocking well all year against the opposition, but Bill and Boice took care of them.” Bellard made it clear that the Aggies’ next opponent, TCU, will be ready to play the Aggies even without the services of first team quarterback Kent Marshall who broke his collarbone last week against Tulsa. “They have a real good foot ball team,” he said. “They’re tough and have good size. The loss of their quarterback certainly didn’t slow them down against Tulsa. The new one, Perry Senn, junior college transfer from Na varro, did a great job throwing the football. They had no loss of effectiveness with him in there. “They have outstanding runners and a big, powerful line. They are capable of throwing but are most explosive running with the ball. “On defense, they have a good football player at every position. They are a tough, hard-nosed bunch.” Practices will again be closed to the public this week while the Aggies prepare for the Horned Frogs.
