The Raiders are fifth national ly in rushing offense with 324 yards per game and are averag ing 35 points per contest. In the conference, Tech leads in boA total offense and rushing offense The key to the offensive punch is quarterback Joe Barnes and tailba'ck George Smith. Barnes, a junior from Big Lake, has gained 193 yards per contest with five touchdown runs and three touchdowns via the passing lanes this year. Smith, a junior college transfer from Los Angeles, California, leads the conference in tandem (rushing and catching) offense with 134 yards per game. Another big plus for the Raid ers is in their kicking game. Don Grimes leads the nation in points per game kicking with a 9.3 aver age and a total of 37 points in four games. The Raiders run out of a pro type offensive formation which head coach Jim Carlen feels suits his teams balanced offensive at tack. Tech’s offensive line is not a large one but quite mobile and experienced. At tackles are Tom Fergerson, 5-11, 225, from Irving and Gary Shuler, 6-2, 221, from San An tonio. Guards are Harold Lyons, 5- 11, 223, from Lufkin and Den nis Allen, 6-0, 240, from Dallas. At center is all-SWC pie-season pick, Russell Ingram, 6-4, 224, from Garland. Barnes’ favorite receiver in Tech’s attack is split end Andre Tillman, 6-5, 224, from Dallas. At tight end is Ronnie Samford, 6- 2, 196, from Dallas. Tech also uses a flanker back for pass routes. Calvin Jones, 6-4, 213, LITTLE JOHN'S BAR B Q AND FRIED CATFISH (On Texas Ave. Next to A&W Rootbeer) SPECIAL CHOPPED BEEF SANDWICHES 35c Each or 3 ,„ r $1.00 DRAFT BEER from Mt. Pleasant, has this job. In Tech’s I formation, James Mosley, 5-8, 214, from Lubbock, has the job of blocking for tail backs Smith and all-SWC of two years ago, Doug McCutchen. Mc- Cutchen, 5-11, 205, from Bronte, led the conference as a sopho more with over 1,000 rushing. Tech’s defensive unit is also not very large but again, quick ness and experience make up the difference. The Raiders will have a five-man front instead of the basic four as has been shown by opponents so far this season. At left end is Gaines Baty, 6-0, 201, from Garland who is another pre-season all-SWC pick. Andy Lowe, 6-2, 210, from Wellington, starts at the right end. Tackles are Tim Schaffner, 6-2, 237, from San Antonio and Davis Corley, 6-3, 216, from Bronte. At middle guard is all-SWC and preseason All-America Donald Rives, 6-2, 206, from Wheeler. Linebackers are Tommy Ryan, 6-0, 198, from Andrews and Quin- tin Robinson, 6-3, 214, from Fort Worth and a premier defensive player slated for conference hon ors this fall. Kenneth Wallace, 5-11, 159, from Lubbock and Randy Olson, 5-10, 170, from Rocky Ford, Colo rado are the cornerbacks while Steve Van Loozen, 5-11, 179, from Houston and Danny Willis, 6-0, 176, from Garland, are at safe ties. Punter is John Garner who has averaged 37.7 yards per kick in 18 attempts. Grimes, the place ment kicker, has never missed an extra point at Texas Tech. Overall, Tech has a powerful offense both rushing and passing and a defense that has not en abled opponents to move consist ently down the field. The Aggies must get to quar terback Barnes and stop the out side running of tailback Smith to be successful in the first SWC tilt for A&M.
