Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, October 4, 1972 THE BATF;! Shoes May Be Hard To Locate, But Not Goalpost LUBBOCK — Texas Tech kicking specialist Don Grimes figures shoe size is a relative thing. After all, he wears a size eight kicking shoe, a size nine street shoe and a size 10 tennis shoe. Despite the variance in sizes, Grimes’ foot is small. It is so small, in fact, that sporting goods stores don’t stock any square- toed kicking footware that will fit. “I have a specially-ordered, handmade kicking shoe that is exactly the size of my foot,” chortles the 5-9, 169-pounder who came to Tech without a scholarship. Certainly nobody can kick about Don’s performances this year. Saturday night against Texas, he tied a Southwest Con ference record by booting four field goals. The mark set by Bruce Alford of TCU in 1965. Ironically enough, Saturday night was not the first time Grimes had toed four field goals in one game. He did the same thing against Oklahoma as a freshman and was the difference for Tech in an 18-10 victory. The Lubbock native credits a new philosophy with having much to do with his success this year. Thus far he has kicked true on seven of 10 field goal attempts. He has never missed an extra point at Tech and has a string of 25 straight over two varsity seasons. “I used to get all excited in the warmup,” explains Grimes of his new theory. “I’ve changed that. Now I kick very little in warmups. My whole new phil osophy is not so much physical as it is mental. “I try to concentrate twice as much as I used to,” he adds. “It’s paying off. I have to get the concentration down before the ball will go over. If the concen tration is right, the kick is good.” Grimes, who learned his tech nique from former Tech kicking standout Kenny Vinyard, is quick to praise holder J i m m y Car michael and the entire field goal and extra point team as being instrumental in his success. “I don’t worry about my kick ing team,” he says. “They are the best there is. That takes the pressure off. Jimmy is a good holder. He will come up and talk to me and reassure me. It takes my mind off the game and cen ters it on the kick.” The kicking specialist is con sidered as something of a lonely breed, a man apart, on some teams. Such is not the case at Texas Tech. In fact, Grimes was as upset as any player in the dressing room after the Texas game. “I did take it hand that's just because ll to lose,” he notes. much a part of this body else. I'm happyl win. I'm disappoints lose.” Grimes, a pro-dental 1 not the only member oil ily with a strong legil er brother Robert,) turned nine this week,) a sandlot standout. 9 WE GIVE Hi! isasj&j WE GIVE WE GIVE _ w isaws: WE GIVE EssP WITH OUR GIGANTIC, * i 111 fl I ~ 11 H 111 fit fig nni _ ^ ■■ > sj? a i # TOWELS % * l ~ FURNITURE POUSH Johnson's Favor * 7-oz.
