Nixon signed Saturday a bill amending the 1972 Higher Edu cation Act by suspending new regulations the administration said crippled the popular student loan program. The bill ended a bookkeeping snarl that threat ened to foreclose the tuition of thousands of students nation wide. Robert M. Logan, director of the TAMU student loon office, said the action by Congress re moved a tremendous block of administrative work. Under the suspended regulations, there were five to seven additional steps re quired to get a government in sured low interest loan. Logan said tty v w regulations represented delay. Now the papers c*n be processed in 36 to 48 hours for students to take to lending agencies. A number of Aggies. Logan noted, have made temporary loans because they were not able to get the long-term loans proc essed The cost will be the higher interest rate, he said. I-ogan arranged with the uni versity’s Fiscal Office to let many^ students pay their fees at a later date when their checks arrive. He said the checks will be de layed three to four weeks and could total over fl million. Monday morning two students phoned Logan to find out if they could .still get into school next week. Both had given op because of the delays. The new regulations now go into effect March 1, 1973. Under the 1972 Higher Edu cation Act, the regulations at tempt to grant federal scholar ship aid on the basis of individual need. The program now uses a 215,000 a year cutoff in family income to determine eligibility. Student Sect ton. Temrie (oerts, Ceerta, T.V. Lemge. Peel Table, Ct*b Student Rates.
