Known as Field Day, the closing exer cise of Amateur Week, it com bines fun of a campout and the excitement of a contest, not to mention serious preparation for emergencies. During the 27-hour period be ginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and running until 4 p.m. Sunday, hams around the country will set up and operate their equipment from parks, beaches and other exotic locations without the bene fit of commercial power — just as they would when a natural disaster cuts the lines. Amateur radio clubs such as A&M’s W5AC, and ad hoc groups of hams will operate as many as 18 different stations in order to contact as many other stations as possible using all available radio bands. Run as a test and contest com bined, amateurs since 1933, ex cept during World War II, have been competing for the largest number of stations contacted during the Field Day period. Although it is run as a contest, the real payoff for Field Day will come in the radio amateur’s re sponse to human needs, during hurricane or tornado season or when other disasters strike, breaking normal means of com munication into and out of the FOR BEST RESULTS TRY BATTALION CLASSIFIED 7b The Voters Of Texas Thank you for your ex pression of confidence in re-electing me to the office of Comptroller of Public Accounts. Today, the old gray stump is a space ship. Tomorrow it may be a fort or a castle. More practically, at lunchtime it's a picnic table. Right now the side yard is my sons' world. Behind a picket fence, they roam the seas and sky in imagination, the sound of their voices reassuring me of their safety. It won't always be this way. Someday, they'll leave the back yard for ever, swashbuckling through a world of schools and camps, friends and parties. How strange it will be—not to guide their every footstep. Where am I to get the courage? Fortunately, I can answer my own question. I have my church, and so do my boys. As a source of great goodness, it will guide them all their days.
