Dr. William P. Fife announced that the 20 high school students are from Texas, Colorado, Michi gan, Florida and Ohio. The roster includes nine girls and 11 boys, with Texans from Irving, Port Neches, Big Spring, Freeport, Houston, Spring, Rich ardson, San Antonio, El Paso, Dumas and Denton. SCUBA training and study of the physics of diving will be cov ered in the June 18 to August 12 program funded by the National Science Foundation. The two-part program will include accelerated study of human body systems most affected by the underwater environment, with emphasis on physiological changes that occur under increased (hyperbaric) pressure. Fife said that students will also conduct individual research proj ects on some aspect of hyper baric physiology. The Health and Physical Edu cation Department will conduct SCUBA training, with dives at TAMU facilities and at least one in a nearby lake. Field trips will include a commercial diving com pany visit. Completion of the course will enable students to re ceive a certified diver’s card. Hiring prospects improving at A&M Employment of A&M graduates “closed on an optimistic note due to increased activity in the clos ing weeks,” Placement Director Robert C. Reese reports. Employers are still contacting the Placement Office seeking qualified graduates, Reese noted. He said it appears numerous employers drastically underesti mated manpower needs, causing the added end-of-year activity. However, even with the im provement the activity at the bachelor’s level is still running behind 1970-71, when recruiting dropped to its lowest point in a number of years, the placement director added. He reported 215 separate em ployers conducted interviews at TAMU during 1971-72, compared to 233 for the same period last year. The Placement Office had 1,064 students interviewing, 650 regis tered alumni—up almost 100 per cent over 1971—and 393 employ ers offered jobs to A&M students. Reese said activity at the doc toral level is ahead of last year, and at the master’s level the of fers have increased 28 per cent. Participants will reside on cam pus. Fife has had considerable hy perbaric research experience and has experimented with a new breathing mixture for deep-sea diving. A former Aerospace Med ical Research Division official with the Air Force, he has logged time inside hypobaric and hyper baric chambers, on a human cen- (brifuge and in supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The University of Oregon, George Washington U. and Ohio Sate graduate teaches on A&M’s biology faculty.
