All systems are go and the countdown has started for the first summer NASCAR Grand National to be staged at College Station’s $7,000,000 Texas World Speedway, Sunday, June 25. Speedway owner Daniel W. Holloway announced the success ful conclusion of negotiations with NASCAR and the granting of a sanction for the race, a 500 mile Winston Cup Grand National event named the Lone Star 600. Hamblen, president of Texas Auto Racing, Inc., and operator of Houston’s Meyer Speedway, will continue his regular Satur day night schedule of racing in Houston. The Lone Star 500 will be the third NASCAR 600 miler to be run over the two-mile high banked Texas World Speedway. The first, run in December 1969, was captured by Bobby Isaac in a Dodge at a record average speed of 144.277 mph. The sec ond 500 miler was won by Rich ard Petty last December 12th in a Plymouth, averaging 144.000 mph. Though the race is scheduled for Sunday, June 25, activity at the speedway will get under way Doodlebugs win bowling league Second-half leaders Doodlebugs won the championship of the Staff-Faculty Bowling League this week by defeating first-half winners Plowshares in a roll-off after the playoff match was tied 2-2. The winning team is composed of Manuel Davenport, Arthur Nightingale, Wendell Horsley and Everett Glazener with Robert Zikes substituting for Horsley in the playoff. Davenport’s three strikes in the last frame sewed up the championship. First-half winners were Ken neth Beerwinkle, Edward Hiler, Hugh McCann and Ernest Red man with David Bowers as a sub stitute during the season. Wednesday, June 21, when the NASCAR Grand National cars and drivers take to the high banks for practice runs and qualifying from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The same schedule will be observed both Thursday and Fri day the 22nd and 23rd, with prac tice in the morning and time trials in the afternoon, then on Saturday the 24th, a final prac tice and qualifying session will be held in the morning. A con solation race for non-qualifiers is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, to be followed by the last practice session for the 50 qualified cars, to: Texas World Speedway, P. O.
