The Texas Longhorns, defending champions, are in second place at 8-4. Texas visits the Horned Frogs’ home grounds of Fort Worth this Friday and Saturday. The Aggies travel to Austin next weekend for what could be the title showdown. For A&M to win conference, it will be necessary for TCU to lose at least three of the six games they play against Texas and Southern Methodist. In addition, the Aggies must keep from losing any of the last six contests. Thus far, A&M has not swept a series. The Aggies boast some potent hitting in SWC action, much of the statistics being the result of the 26-hit performance against Texas Tech last weekend. A&M is second in team batting, with Texas leading the league. Senior center fielder R. J. Eng- lert leads the SWC in hitting, breaking a tie with Texas third baseman David Chalk. Englert has a .462 average going into this weekend’s action. He is hitting .450 for the year, including a 24- game hitting streak. Englert has hit in all 12 of the league games this year, and should he continue that string through the Rice series, he will tie an SWC record. Englert has 24 league hits in 52 trips to the plate. He is first in hits, tied for third in doubles, tied for fifth in runs batted in and tied for fifth in runs scored. As a team, the Aggies are hit ting .296 in league play. They are second in runs scored (78), second in hits (125), second in runs bat ted in (61) and third in doubles (17). Texas leads in all these categories with a .329 average, 91 runs, 131 hits, 80 runs batted in and 24 doubles. Other Aggies among the top SWC hitters are third baseman Jim Hacker, who is fifth at .406, first baseman Butch Ghutzman, who is tied for thirteenth with left fielder Sandy Bate at .333. Of the 22 top hitters in the league, seven are Longhorns and four are Aggies. Last place Tech and first place TCU each have three of their players among the leaders, while Baylor and SMU have two each. Rice has only one player, shortstop Sheldon Kauf man, in the top 22. He is ninth with a .341 average. A&M pitchers Bruce Katt and Charlie Kelley are fourth and sixth, respectively. Katt is 3-1, with a 0.87 earned run average. Kelley is 2-1 in conference games, and he has an ERA of 3.60. The seniors are tied for fifth in SWC strikeouts. Katt will start the nine-inning nightcap Friday, while Kelley is expected to pitch the Saturday contest. The starting lineup for the Ag gies will include Ghutzman at first, Jim Langford at second, Carroll Lilly or Mike Schraeder at shortstop and Hacker at third. The outfield will consist of Bate or Jim Atterbury in left, Englert in center, and Gene Reinarz or Karl Bystrom in right. Tommy Hawthorne will share catching duties with Mike Frazier. Coach Tom Chandler will choose the starter for the first game from several prospects. Charlie Jenkins looked good in four in nings Tuesday against the Uni versity of Houston. Steve Janda has been effective in non-confer ence games, hurling a no-hitter against Air Force and a three- hitter against the Cougars, but he has not done well in his SWC appearances. Jim Wallace or Jackie Binks may get the nod also. Rice’s claim to fame this sea son has been a three-game sweep of the Texas Longhorns in Hous ton two weeks ago. The Owls sport a pair of fine pitchers in the Pettit brothers, David and Mike. The Galena Park products rank seventh and eighth among league hurlers. David, a senior, is 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA. He has given up 31 hits, 11 runs and 13 walks in 25 innings. He has struck out 12. Mike, a sophomore, is 3-2 with a 0.26 ERA. He has allowed 13 hits, two runs and 15 walks in 35 innings. He has 29 strikeouts to his credit, second in the league. This will be the final home series for the Aggies, who close out the regular season in Austin next weekend. Friday’s double- header starts at 1:00, with the Saturday game beginning at noon because of the 3:00 Maroon-White football game. He called the squad together for a long lecture before he dismissed them for the day. “I’m starting my 16th year at Texas and I think that’s as sorry a scrimmage as I’ve seen,” Royal said. “No aggression. It was like throwing two wool socks together. You couldn’t hear anything. It wasn’t bad. It was pitiful.” Sophomore-to-be Mike Presley quarterbacked the No. 1 team against the No. 1 defense to only two touchdowns in nine tries. First-string quarterback Alan Lowery was hospitalized with an infected elbow from an Astroturf burn. Halfback Don Burrisk ran six yards for a touchdown to com plete a five-play, 60-yard drive. The other TD came on Tommy Landry’s 60-yard burst up the middle. Adrian Ford quarterbacked the No. 2 offense to only one TD in six tries. Steve Fleming scored on a two-yard run. Ford was the leading rusher with 77 yards in 11 tries. Landry rushed five times for 71 yards. The final Longhorn Orange- White spring game will he held at 4 p.m. April 29 in Memorial Stadium. 5-YEAR -- 50,000 MILE ALIGNME GUARANTEED IN WRITING OUR EXPERT MECHANICS DO ALL THIS WORK: The purchose of a jtabilized align ment from a Firestone Store entitles ypu to a complete inspection and alignment every 5,000 miles, or as often as necessary, in accordance with the terms of our printed guarantee certificate with no charge for the setting or adjustment of any alignment angles which may be required.
