EN b Senators accuse Briscoe of misusing influence 1-915 Jr a n—611 -438 ve )6 AUSTIN, Tex. UP) — Two state senators, including one who is campaigning for Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, said Thursday Dolph Briscoe used his influence to get a $209,000 private road built “straight as an arrow” to Bris coe’s hunting lodge. “The construction of this road appears to involve cronyism, fa voritism, abuse of position, and the blatant use of taxpayers' money for private gain,” said a joint statement by Sen. W. T. Moore of Bryan and Oscar Mauzy of Dallas. The senators said they checked with the Texas Highway Depart ment Thursday morning about Farm 2688 in Dimmit County, which was paved from 1960 to 1965 beginning at ,U.S. 83, two ** IB A TTALION CLASSIFIED lac SRVICf faction lipmeir; s Ave, 02 WANT AD RATES 3ne day b<t per word li per word each additional day Minimum charge—76tf Classified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication FOR SALE i970, 12 x 60 mobile home, two bedroom, e bath, fully furnished. 846-6308 after 6. 109tfn ipe ck with auto recorder levt control. Asked how Briscoe has abused his position since he was not £i public official in 1960-65, Moore said the highway commission chairman during that period was Herbert Petry Jr. of Carrizo Springs. Moore said Petry is Bris coe’s “lawyer, close friend and supporter.” They said they finally decided to do something about it because so many of their constituents had asked them about it. If there was nothing illegal, Moore was asked, how would he characterize it? “I’d say a very powerful man was in a position to get some thing he wanted ... he wanted a private road and he got it paved—at state expense,” Moore said. Briscoe has been campaigning on a platform of honesty and in tegrity. The senators said in a prepared statement that he “has been going all over Texas throw ing stones at people in govern ment and questioning the integ rity of other people.” ference. Numerous polls have indicated Barnes and Briscoe could gain a runoff following the May 6 Dem ocratic primary election, and Barnes started the first week in April singling out Briscoe for criticism in the governor’s race. Liberal Arts leading way in A&M academic growth By C. DAVID STASNY TOEFL will soon be introduced at A&M, according to Dr. W. David Maxwell. It’s not a new drug for the treatment of hoof- and-mouth disease. Maxwell is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and TOEFL is Teaching of English as a Foreign Language. This is just part of the recent academic expansion at the uni versity. Included are comparative medicine, a hard-science anthro pology program, a fine arts col lege and the latest news-maker, announcement of plans for possi bly establishing a law school. Why is A&M proposing to ex pand into such areas as law ? “This will broaden the base of the university,” Dr. Haskell Mon roe, assistant vice president for academic affairs, said in a recent interview. “It is another place where we can serve.” Monroe said the proposed law school is subject to approval by the State Coordinating Board and the Texas Legislature. If approv ed, the school would open for the fall session of 1974 at the earliest, he said. He added that the ex- MONEY Loaned on Anything of Value Sports equipment Stereo equipment Guitars-Amps Jewelry-Tools Guhs-Cameras No credit record required! Come to see us. Texas State Credit 1014 Texas Ave. Weingarten Center istence of four other state law schools has prompted tentative specialization in areas such as natural resources and engineer ing law. “We hope to provide a clinical experience in law firms for the students,” Monroe said. He noted that this is not done at other schools. The present comparative medi cine program, which deals with animal-human medical relation ships, is the result of a recent co-study agreement with Baylor University, Monroe said. Maxwell explained that anthro pology is “getting started with a bang” with its hard science back ground. The expanding program, which he said is “rather unique” by nature, will soon move to Bol ton Hall. The College of Liberal Arts has been the center of innovation and expansion—both physical and academic. Besides anthropology, political science and sociology will also be moving to Bolton Hall. The economics and English de partments will have space in the new building northeast of the Academic building. The college is using a computer ized teacher-evaluation system to revise teaching habits of liberal arts professors through student comment. Maxwell said only the professor sees the results of the computer analysis. The college also introduced the university honors and pass—fail programs, which will soon expand to other colleges. Maxwell cred ited the Liberal Arts Student Council with innovating pass-fail. Now, he said, the council is pro moting the addition of sex edu cation courses. He spoke of plans for an ad junct professor working at a mental institution where gradu ate students in psychology can train. Cross-listing of courses will be incorporated next fall. A double-major program is also in the works, Maxwell said. A practical Spanish program for teachers is planned for the Modern Language Department. Maxwell said the program would emphasize local dialects rather than Castilian Spanish. Monroe said plans for a fine arts college are being considered by a committee which will prepare recommendations to the adminis tration. The report is due within a month. Meanwhile, the College of Lib eral Arts is expanding its list of courses in fine arts. A request for a major in theater arts is pending, Maxwell said. Some stalwart Aggies may fear this diversification will affect A&M’s dominance in the fields of agriculture and engineering. Ed Cooper, assistant to President Jack Williams, discounts the pos sibility. “We are experts in these fields,” he said. “Just because we make a thrust in marine science doesn’t mean we are relegating agricul ture to a lower level ...
