Ed ward Kennedy, D-Mass., has de nied a congressman’s suggestion that he used his influence to pre vent questioning of acting Atty. Gen. Richard Kleindienst in con nection with the Texas stock scandal, it was reported Thurs day. The report was the latest de velopment in a series of questions raised by Rep. Henry Gonzalez. The San Antonio Democrat has repeatedly blasted the immunity granted Houston financier Frank Sharp, a central figure in the scandal. He says Kleindienst should be questioned on this issue while being considered for the attorney general’s post. Gonzalez earlier had told the San Antonio News that he “could only assume” Kennedy had “pass ed the word” to senators in terested in probing Sharp's im munity to “forget about Frank Sharp.” The News said Kennedy was questioned about Gonzalez’s com ments in Washington. “It’s a complete lie,” the News reported Kennedy said. It quoted him as adding: “Sharp is a Demo crat. He’s been indicted ... this is a sheer fabrication.” Gonzalez earlier had said Ken nedy was a “bosom friend” of Claude Hooten, who is married to Sharp’s daughter. Kennedy acknowledged that Hooten is a close friend and was his roommate at Harvard, the News reported. Told of Kennedy’s reaction on the Kleindienst-Sharp issue, Gon zalez said Thursday that Ken nedy, therefore, should “take the lead” in questioning Kleindienst about what Gonzalez calls the “quickie deal” to grant Sharp immunity. Gonzalez has contended that the immunity arrangement was made to protect former Asst. Atty. Gen. Will Wilson, a Texas Democrat turned Republican. Wil son resigned from his Justice De partment post after coming under fire from Gonzalez for weeks. “I don’t think there is a history of a similar quickie deal in the annals of the Justice Depart ment,” Gonzalez said of the im munity. He said Wilson “had al ways blamed Kleindienst” and contended that Kleindienst had made the decision. Gonzalez said Sens. Birch Bayh, D-Ind., and John Tunney, D- Calif., had expressed an interest in airing the Sharp matter during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s consideration of Kleindienst’s ap pointment, but no such questions have been asked. Bayh and Tunney are members of the committee along with Kennedy. lying IT! When Earl comes to work ev ery morning, you won’t mistake him for a ray of sunshine. His rimless glasses and half-scowl give him the appearance of man who hates kids and dogs and women wearing pants. Talking to him Monday morning corrected that misconception. “I like everything in general about the students. Oh, we have a few who are mischievous and like to tinker with the tape decks, but most, almost all, of the kids are fine. Are youngsters any differ ent these days than in the past? He has worked at the language lab since 1960. The Modern Languages Depart ment teaches courses in Spanish, French, German, Russian and Czech. The lab is an indispensable part of the instruction and it is Earl’s responsibility. Besides taking care of 125 tape recorders, 64 of which are in lis tening booths in the lab proper, he records or duplicates the prac tice tapes. Tapes are kept for all languages and course levels de pendent on the enrollment. Because of early-morning and nighttime hours of operation, Earl has three student assist ants: Ronnie Ledbetter, Mrs. Lin da Moffitt and John Chynoweth. Speaking of Chynoweth, Earl said, “Don’t ask me how to pro nounce that German’s name. I haven’t gotten my tongue twisted right yet.” Earl doesn’t speak any foreign languages himself, but he feels, “everyone at A&M should have to take at least one semester of a foreign language, just to be exposed to it. When I was in the Army there were many times I wished I could have had the op portunity to study a language.” BUSIER - JONES AGENCY REAL ESTATE • INSURANCE F.H.A.—Veterans and Conventional Loans FARM & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texas Ave. (in,Ridgecrest) 846-3708 YOU ARE INVITED GOSPEL MEETING Speakers and Subjects: Monday: Malcolm King, Crockett, “God’s Saving Power” Tuesday: Bill Miller, Angleton, “The Holy Spirit and Miraculous Gifts” Wednesday: Joe Scarborough, Austin, “The New Testa ment Faith In the Twentieth Century” Thursday: Richard Gravy, Jr., Huntsville, “What Sin Has Done For Me” Friday: Travis Ferrell, Bedias, “The Old and The New Covenants” 7:30 P.
