The Longhorns won the affair, earning 77 points to 50 for the Owls and 42 for A&M. Texas won seven of the events, Rice six and the Aggies three. Among the more notable A&M absentees were Marvin Mills, Doug Brodhead, Scottie Jones, Frank Ybarbo, Phil McGuire and Johnny Mayo. Yet, the Aggies still managed to place in all but the pole vault, high jump, jave lin, 440 yard dash and the mile run. Winning events for A&M were the 440 yard relay, the 220 yard dash and the 880. The 100 yard dash was a big event, with Ag gies placing second, third and fourth. The team of Gerald D’Abrosio, Billy Porter, Steve Barre and Donny Rogers sped to the tape in a season best time of 40.8. D’Abrosio, a 5-8 freshman, was running in place of Marvin Mills. Rogers won the 220 with a time of 21.7 in a race which saw two of the five runners fall out with pulled muscles. A&M soph omore Alan Swagerty was sec ond at 21.9. Willie Blackmon, who is estab lishing himself as the man to beat in the Southwest Confer ence, ran his best time in winning the 880, 1:50.7. His previous best this season was a 1:51.2. Teammate Horace Grant, a fresh man, was second to his roommate Blackmon, 1:50.9. at 10.2 for fourth place. The mile relay team, with Swagerty running the anchor leg for the first time in place of Brodhead, was second, after lead ing for three laps. Robert Brew started with a five-yard lead, but Texas’ Craig Brooks closed the gap on Grant in the second leg. In the 100 yard dash, Porter finished second with a time of 10.0. D’Abrosio came in third, 10.1, and Rogers was close behind Blackmon took over the third lap, giving Swagerty a 10-yard margin to work with. Ed Wright of Texas, who won the 440 in 47.5, blistered past Swagerty after 220 yards. A strong finish by the Aggie fell five yards short, as the Longhorns posted a time of 3:12.1. 3:12.9.
