THE BATTALION Wednesday, March 29, 1972 College Station, Texas Page 7 In San Antonio Thursday and Friday Aggies play Falcons and St. Mary’s By JOHN CURYLO Battalion Sports Writer The Texas Aggie baseball team begins the Easter holidays Thursday and Friday by playing a pair of doubleheaders in San Antonio. A&M takes on the Air Force Academy Falcons Thursday at Keefe Field, while Friday’s twin- bill is against St. Mary’s. The first two games begin at 1:00, and Friday’s contests start at 5:00. Monday, St. Mary’s won two games from Air Force, 2-0 and 4- 0. Earlier in the season, the Aggies beat St. Mary’s, 2-0 and 5- 2. In the 2-0 game, Bruce Katt pitched a no-hitter. The Aggies are 13-7 for the year and 3-3 in Southwest Con ference play. A&M won two games of a three-game league series from Southern Methodist last weekend in Dallas. They won a doubleheader Friday, 6-0 and 8-4, but dropped a single game Saturday, 8-3. A&M pounded out 22 hits in the twinbill, but they managed six base hits in the nine-inning loss to the Mustangs. In the se ries with the Ponies, the Aggies clouted their first three home runs of the season. Pitcher Charlie Kelley got the first one, a solo shot in the sec ond game Friday. Catcher Mike Frazier hit a two-run homer in the next inning, his first varsity hit. The only tallies in Satur day’s game came on a three-run homer by 5-6 second baseman Jim Langford. Several pitchers will be used in the two doubleheaders. Among the hurlers on the staff are Katt, 3-2, who has a conference earned run average of 0.00 and a season ERA of 0.51. The other senior pitcher is Kelley, who has a 3-3 mark, 1-1 in SWC action. Kelley’s ERA is 2.96 for the year. The other pitchers are Jackie Binks, 2-1, Steve Janda, 2-1, Bobby Wittkamp, 2-0, Charlie Jenkins, 1-0, Ben Sims, Jim Wal lace, Mike Reaves and Josh Gar rett. The lineup for the Aggies will have Butch Ghutzman (.200) at first base, Langford (.323) at second, Jim Hacker (.288) at third, Carroll Lilly (.292) or Mike Schraeder (.161) at short, Jim Atterbury (.179) or Sandy Bate (.292) in left field, R. J. Englert, the team’s leading hit ter (.431) in center and Karl Bystrom (.333) or Gene Reinarz (.231) in right. The catcher will be Frazier (.095) or Tommy Hawthorne (.143). Englert leads the team in bat ting average, hits (31), runs (16), runs batted in (18) and triples (4). The senior has a 12- game hitting streak and has hit safely in 17 of A&M’s 20 games. Langford is sporting a nine-game streak of hits. The Aggies are hitting .260 as a team, while the pitchers have compiled a 2.28 earned run aver age. Having committed 29 er rors, as opposed to 48 for the opposition, A&M’s fielding per centage is .970. The next conference action for the Aggies is an April 7-8 dou bleheader with the Baylor Bears here. After that, A&M plays Houston here April 11. Then the Aggies travel to Lubbock for a series with Texas Tech April 14-15. April 18, a return twinbill is scheduled in Houston with the Cougars. April 21-22, the Aggies host the Rice Owls before closing out the season April 28-29 in Austin with the Texas Long horns. The Steers are favored to win the crown this year. The last time they failed to get at least a share of the title was 1964, when the Aggies won the cham pionship outright. Should Texas win, it would mean they swept the flags in football, basketball and baseball this year. SMU won swimming, and the Horns have a chance to win golf. Rice is fav ored in tennis and track, al though Texas could pull an upset in the latter. Elvin Hayes may be moved if Rockets get new center HOUSTON UPl—Elvin Hayes, one of the leading scorers in the National Basketball Association, may be ticketed for a move from center to forward next season, Rockets Coach Tex Winter said Tuesday. “Our idea at this time is that in order for this franchise to be a winner, to compete against the Jabbars, Chamberlains, and Nate Thurmonds, we need to get a center that is a bona fide shot rejector,” Winter told the Hous- Defensive progress is pleasing, says coach Melvin Robertson A&M defensive coordinator Melvin Robertson expressed pleasure with the Aggies’ defen sive progress following Tuesday’s two-hour practice. “The first defense is making good progress and the second de fensive unit, despite Saturday’s scrimmage statistics, is showing improvement,” Robertson said. “They’re learning basic defenses and aren’t doing any stunting yet and they’re showing good prog ress in techniques.” Robertson and defensive line coach Dee Powell both singled out tackle Bill Wiebold for his performance Tuesday. “Wiebold had his best day of the spring,” Robertson said. “Boice Best, the other tackle, always looks good.” Among the offensive linemen, left guard Todd Christopher drew the praises of offensive coordi nator Ben Hurt. “The first team line looked real good in Satur day’s scrimmage and Christopher had a good workout today,” Hurt said. The Aggies will work again Wednesday and then break for the Easter vacation. They’ll re turn to work the following Wed nesday. Netters defeat TCU Horned Frogs in conference match Tuesday The Aggies rolled to a 7-0 ten nis victory over the Texas Chris tian Horned Frogs in Fort Worth Tuesday. In other singles matches Bill Wright defeated John Pottell, 6-1, 6-3, Bill Hoover defeated Max Falls, 6-1, 6-3, Dan Courson beat John Fletcher, 6-1, 6-4 and Tommy Connell won over John Matzilevich, 6-0, 6-3. In doubles competition, Fikes and Courson defeated Corominas and Ned James, 6-2, 6-0, and Wright and Hoover beat Fletcher and John Kritser, 6-2, 6-1. ton Sportswriters and Sports- casters Association. Winter said the 6-foot-9 Hayes did a tremendous job at center considering his height, but had a tough time when he came up against much taller opposition. “This is the key to it,” Winter said, “which means we’ve got to get Elvin to play forward. If he couldn’t play forward he’d go back to the post and try to beat out whoever we had there. “For us to win, we’ve got to face the fact that we need a big post man.” Hayes moved out to the for ward position several times this season with backup center Dick Cunningham taking over the post. Hayes has averaged more than 28 points during four NBA sea sons but has had most of his problems on defense. Winter said the Rockets’ No. 4 choice in the April 10 NBA draft could be an important factor in the team’s progress. It could provide them with the veteran center they are looking for. “We could use the No. 4 choice to try to trade for an established NBA veteran or somebody who has proven his ability in the league,” Winter said. What does Elvin think of mov ing to forward? “He’s very enthusiastic about it,” Winter said. “He concurs that this is necessary for us to be a winner. He’s going to have to be strongly motivated to do it. It won’t be easy.” Winter said he would get to gether with new Rocket president and general manager Ray Pat terson next week to discuss the draft.
