Gen. Crawford Mar- investigation of the Moody 'oundation told newsmen Tues- two officials of the founda- had paid him $3,500 for a 14-page notarized statement. John B. Phelps, a New York ersonnel consultant, and New fork lawyer Roy Cohn charged a news conference the Mar- report twisted information rom the statement in such a manner as to form an attack against Sheam Moody Jr., a grandson of the late W. L. Moody Jr. Phelps denied that he had lied but said, “My statements were put in the language they wanted.” He said he first received $500 in May, 1971, from Richard Kee ton, member of a Houston law firm that represents the founda tion. He said this payment was made after a five-hour session during which the notarized state ment was prepared. He said Paul Haas of Corpus Christi, then chairman of the foundation’s trus tees, later gave him four cash payments totaling $3,000. The charges brought quick de nials from Haas, Keeton and Martin. Haas said Phelps had request ed funds from him numerous times but that he had refused all the requests. He said Keeton had paid Phelps $500 for expenses and loss of time in traveling to Houston to make the statement. “What the man has said is a lie,” Keeton said, adding that he believes Cohn’s strategy is aimed at hurting Martin’s cam paign for re-election. Haas indicated agreement at a news conference when he was asked if Cohn and Shearn Moody Jr. were trying to hurt Martin politically. “It is my opinion, but I have no proof, that they are helping Mr. Hill,” Haas said. John Hill, a Houston lawyer, is one of Martin’s opponents in the May 6 Democratic primary. Martin said Cohn’s charges are an attack on the integrity of Wilmer Hunt, retired Houston civ il district judge who prepared the report on the foundation. “Regardless of any wild charges, desperation tactics or half truths Cohn may spread, the Hunt report is the only complete and objective investigation of the Moody Foundation and I am proud to stand behind it,” Martin said. Haas said he did not know until Tuesday that Phelps once had received, a four-year pro bated sentence for interstate transportation of forged docu ments. Phelps had said he en tered a plea of guilty to such a charge in 1966. Cohn said Phelps contacted him last Tuesday after having talked with Haas about $15,000 needed “to go into a little business.” Cohn said Haas had told Phelps such SPECIALS GOOD WED, THUR, FRI.,& SAT. Haas distributed copies of a handwritten letter which he said Phelps had addressed to him and had delivered to Keeton upon ar riving in Houston last Tuesday. Haas said that upon advice of counsel “certain statements against Sheam Moody Jr. and Roy Cohn” had been deleted from the copies of the letter. The letter described Haas as “just and honorable in executing your duties as trustee of the Moody Foundation.” After a de leted section, the letter continued “I feel you have witnessed enough of Mr. Moody Jr.’s actions to agree with me at least in your own private thoughts.” ' receives A&M $62,400 grant for fellowships The U.
