NSF grants $13,000 to A&M for summer science program A $13,739 National Science Foundation grant has been award ed A&M for a summer science training program in hyperbaric and underwater physiology for high ability high school students, President Jack K. Williams an nounced. The eight-week program will involve 20 students in study and research dealing with man's physi cal status in penetration of the sea. Dr. William P. Fife, biology professor, will direct the June 18 to August 12 program including basic instruction in SCUBA div ing. “We wil give participants basic knowledge and understanding of the physics of diving,” Fife said. “With this they will nail down a problem for investigation.” He indicated the two-part pro gram will provide an accelerated study of human body systems most affected by the underwater environment, emphasizing physi ological changes which occur un der increased (hyperbaric) pres sure. SCUBA training conducted for the program by the Health and Physical Education Department will consist of lecture and actual diving experience. Students com pleting the course may receive a certified diver’s card, signify- Legett Hall begins project for community Legett Hall will open its Boys Club community service project Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. with a basketball game between the Legett Hall team and the Bryan Boys Club team. After the game, the film “Mal function Junction,” filmed by Legett Hall members last year, will be shown. Refreshments will then be served. The activities will be held at the Bryan Boys Club. Oceanography gets $748,913 A&M has been awarded a $748,- 913 Office of Naval Research grant for continued support of the institution’s oceanographic program. Dr. Richard A. Geyer, head of TAMU’s Oceanography Depart ment, said a portion of the funds will be used to help finance op eration of the department’s 180- foot research vessel, the R/V Alaminos. The award also will support approximately 12 re search projects conducted by TAMU oceanographers. Geyer noted ONR support of the university’s oceanographic program now totals more than $4 million during the past five years. A&M coed chosen Junior Sweetheart Linda Todd, a freshman liberal arts major at TAMU, was select ed Junior Sweetheart at the Junior Class Ball Saturday night. The 19-year-old Bryan coed has blue eyes and brown hair. Training dives will be in TAMU facilities, with at least one in a nearby lake. Field trips will in clude a visit to a commercial diving company. Facilities for student use in clude a hyperbaric laboratory operated by Fife. It has a cham ber capable of reaching a simu lated depth of 1,800 feet under the ocean, or a simulated altitude of 40,000 feet. Advanced students interested in the program should be excellent swimmers or hold the Red Cross life saving certificate, Fife noted. Application forms may be ob tained from Prof. C. M.
