The Aggies won 2-1 and 6-1. A&M never trailed in either game, and five pitchers were used in the sixteen innings. The Cardinals hit safely 12 times in the twinbill. Jackie Binks was the winner in the first contest, going five in nings and yielding four hits in blanking the Redbirds. The soph omore southpaw struck out three and did not walk a batter. He was relieved by Bobby Wittkamp, who gave up one run and three door hear- lice were General his ruling 1 spokes- hits. The Aggies got their two runs in the third inning. With one out, Binks reached first on a mis- played ground ball, taking sec ond as a result of the error. First baseman Butch Ghutzman drove him home with a base hit. Jim Atterbury forced Ghutzman at second, but the left fielder came home on R. J. Englert’s fourth triple of the season. Lamar got a tally across in the sixth frame when Greg Car penter and Gary Wendlet sand wiched singles around a pair of fly balls, and then executed a double steal. Carpenter scored when Aggie shortstop Mike Schraeder hobbled a ground ball by Mike Kuecker. Binks threw 49 pitches during his five inning stint. His record is 1-1, with Coach Tom Chandler counting on him to work as the third starter in conference series behind Bruce Katt and Charles Kelley. In the second game, nine strikeouts and two double plays kept the Cardinals from capital izing on five hits and eight walks given up by A&M pitchers dur ing the nine-inning affair. Eng- lert pounded out four hits in four times at bat to lead a bar rage that produced base runners in all but one inning. Karl Bystrom stroked a pair of doubles, while relief pitcher Charlie Jenkins helped his own cause with three consecutive sin gles, as 15 A&M hits made the going easy all the way. Starter Steve Janda went the first four innings, giving up one hit. The junior right hander walked six Cardinals and fanned four. Jenkins came in for 4% frames, allowing four hits and Lamar’s only run. The right hander struck out five and walked two. Jenkins made his first appear ance of the year, having recently completed duty with the A&M basketball team. He was steady until the last inning, when two hits, a walk, a fielder’s choice and a pair of wild pitches added up to a run for the Redbirds. The Aggies got on the board early, scoring twice in the sec ond inning on a double by Bys trom and singles by Carroll Lilly and Jim Langford. With Jim Atterbury on first in the third frame, Englert ripped a scream ing drive down the left field line. Atterbury scored, but Englert was ruled out for failing to touch second base. This made Jim Hacker’s double a waste, as Bys trom fanned to end the inning. Englert drove in a man in the fifth when Atterbury got on via a fielder’s choice and stole sec ond. Englert hit a single to right- center, bringing home the fourth A&M tally. Bystrom doubled to left-center to begin the sixth, taking third on an infield out by Schraeder. Langford lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score the junior right fielder. The seventh frame gave the Aggies their last marker when Jenkins singled to right. He moved around on a wild pitch and a base i-ap by Ghutzman to close the run production by A&M.
