UP>— Basketball coach Press Maravich ni Louisiana State was fired Monday along with his two as sistants, the school announced. “I have reluctantly reached tke conclusion that our basket ball program will have a better opportunity for success with the change in the coaching staff,” said Athletic Director Carl Mad dox in a prepared statement. The two assistants fired were Jay McCreary and Greg Bern- brook. The firings are effective im mediately. Maravich is the father of bas ketball star Pete Maravich, who played for LSU before signing a multi-million-dollar contract with the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association. “The action has the approval of the athletic council, the uni versity administration and the LSU board of supervisors,” Mad dox said. "I have high regard for Coach Maravich, Coach McCreary and Coach Bernbrock as persons, and each is dedicated to the game of basketball. “I regret that a change is nec essary to further the interests of a sound, magnetic basketball program at LSU,” he added. Maddox said a screening com mittee appointed by LSU Chan cellor Cecil J. Taylor, is working to select a new head coach.
