Williams has mnounced. The program will coordinate of federally-funded oceano- ^aphic facilities including ships |i,d shore-based support activi ties. Institutions without such fa cilities but having qualified scientists with oceanographically oriented, federally supported re search programs can participate, indicated Dr. John C. Calhoun jr,, academic vice president and Sea Grant Program director. A&M is one of four U. S. uni versities receiving Sea Grant College designation. Dr. Calhoun said that the Na tional Science Foundation has included in its annual ship oper ations grant to TAMU limited additional funds to provide ship support for universities meeting special criteria. Initiated along the lines of the University-National Oceano graphic Laboratory System (UNOLS) of which Texas A&M is a charter member, the state wide program has been desig nated mini-NOLS. Forty-two Texas colleges and universities, from Angelo State to West Texas State University, have been invited to participate by designating a coordinator, ac cording to Dr. Richard A. Geyer, Oceanography Department head. Institution coordinators will meet at Texas A&M Jan. 17 to discuss the program. Major colleges invited to par ticipate include Baylor, the Uni versity of Corpus Christi, the University of Houston, Lamar State, North Texas State, Rice, Texas A&I, Sam Houston State, Southern Methodist, Southwest Texas State, S. F. Austin, Texas Tech, several University of Tex as branches, Texas Woman’s University and Trinity Univer sity. Among community colleges in vited are Brazosport, Galveston and Lee College of Baytown. TAMU’s oceanographic and marine science research fleet in cludes a variety of vessels. NORTH GATE COLLEGE STATION 846-0223 Two A&M students have been cited by the Marine Corps for “superior achievement” in the Platoon Leaders Course, the Corps’ prime officer candidate program. Mark R. Mitchell of Beeville and Robert E. King of Austin, both members of the Corps of Cadets, were formally presented letters of commendation Monday by Dr. Jack K. Williams, presi dent. The letters, written by Lt. Gen. W. G. Thrash, commanding gen eral of the Marine Corps Devel opment and Education Command at Quantico, Va., noted the stu dents’ names have been placed on the commanding general’s honor list. Both students were platoon honor men during six weeks of PLC summer training at Quan tico. Mitchell, son of retired Ma rine Maj. and Mrs. Weldon R. Mitchell of Route 2, Beeville, is a senior majoring in civil engi neering. Mitchell this year at tended the last of two required periods of summer training as prerequisites for receiving com missions through the PLC pro gram upon graduation. He also was platoon honor man during his first summer training period. King, a sophomore majoring in parks and recreation, is the son of Mrs. Marie King of 6302 Turnabout Lane, Austin. He at tended his first period of train ing last year. Dr. Williams was joined in making the presentations by Col. Thomas R. Parsons, commandant of Corps of Cadets. Applications now available for glamour college contest Applications are now available for girls interested in being A&M’s candidate for “Glamour’s 1972 Ten Top College Girls Con test.” Winners of the contest will be chosen on the basis of leadership in an extracurricular activity and on commitment to do some thing to improve the world. The “Ten Top College Girls” will be featured in “Glamour’s” August issue. As a prize they will receive a trip to Europe this summer. A&M’s candidate will be spon sored by the MSC Host and Fashion Committee. Applica tions and further information can be found at the Dean of Women’s office, room 103 of the Academic building.
