THE BATTALION
Aftermath of UCLA trip is 86-68 win over Bobcats
By JOHN CURYLO
Battalion Sports Editor
The Texas Aggies saw the best
in the business trounce them Sat
urday night and took it out on
Southwest Texas State Tuesday
night in G. Rollie White Coli
seum.
Victims of a 117-53 rout by
the UCLA Bruins in Califox*nia,
A&M bounced back with an BO
OS victory over the Bobcats.
Pauley Pavilion and the top-
ranked Bruins totally over
whelmed the Aggies. UCLA’s
wealth of talent was too much
for outmanned A&M.
From the beginning, the size
and ability of the Californians
showed without a doubt. The Ag
gies were out-rebounded 07-45,
with the big factor being height.
Every missed shot gave UCLA
the ball, and nearly every pos
session gave them two points.
A&M shot 30%,' while the Bruins
hit on 50% of their tries.
The national power was led by
Bill Walton with 23 points and
18 rebounds. Keith Wilkes fol
lowed with 22 points and 17 re
bounds, and Greg Lee added 15
tallies, Henry Bibby 11, Tommy
Curtis 10 and Swen Nater 10,
with as many rebounds.
Mario Brown and Bob Gobin
had 10 points each, followed by
Randy Knowles and Jeff Over
house with nine. Knowles had
10 rebounds and Overhouse sev
en. Wayne Howard had five
points, Rick Duplantis four,

But if the Aggies were gun-
shy, Southwest suffered the con
sequences, with A&M hauling in
61 rebounds to the Bobcats’ 38.
The San Marcos team managed
to hit 45.8% from the field, but
the Aggies shot 58.1%.
A&M dominated from the be
ginning, starting with Gobin’s
layup after the opening tip.
Overhouse, Brown and Howard
led the first half charge, scoring
11, 10 and eight points respec
tively.
Brown hit an eight-fobt jump
shot six minutes into the contest
to give the Aggies a 15-9 lead.
Another six minutes passed, and
the junior college transfer hit
one from nine feet away, making
it 29-20.
With 2:56 to go in the period,
Gobin drew a foul when Alan
Rheaume charged on a driving
layup. The 6-3 junior hit both
free throws. Then he stole the
inbounds pass and was fouled
again, sinking both charity shots
to make it 39-25.
A&M kept it up after the in
termission, raising the score to
54-32 on another free throw by
Gobin, who converted five of six
penalty shots. The Aggies kept
the margin in this area, leading
62-41 with 14:12 showing.
In the next six minutes they
scored once on a layup by Over
house. With the lead down to 11
with 8:25 remaining, Howard hit
a short jumper to make it 66-53.
The Bobcats trimmed it to
eight two times, but Overhouse
hit a pair of free throws and
Howard did the same. Then,
Overhouse struck on a layup with
an assist from Howard, and it
was 77-63 with 4:07 to play.
The Aggies continued the ral
ly with Gobin making a layup,
Knowles a pair of free throws
and a 24-foot jumper and How
ard a free shot. Knowles put the
finishing touch on Southwest
with 10 seconds left, popping the
net on a 20 footer from the left
side.
Overhouse had 13 rebounds, j
Knowles 10 and Brown seven.
Gobin was ci*edited with nine as
sists, in addition to playing a
fine defensive game.
