Papre f, College Station, Texas Thursday, November 11, 1971 the battauoh Last home game Fish attempt to bounce back against Picadors tonight By BILL HENRY Texas Tech will be tonight’s guest in Kyle Field as the Texas A&M Fish football team tries to get back into the win column af ter a stunning 24-13 loss to Rice in Houston two weeks ago. Kick off time for the contest will be 7:30 p.m. “Texas Tech has got the best team we’ve faced so far,” stated coach Jim Kellar. “They play real tough, aggressive defense andhave excellent coaching as the varsity aides guide the practices two days a week.” Tech’s record to date is 0-2-1 but this is deceiving because of CASA CHAPULTEPEC OPEN 11:00 A. In three games the Picadors have played Arkansas, whom they tied 7-7, Houston, who beat them 14-7, and Oklahoma, who also added a loss, 15-12. “They have the toughest sched ule of any freshman squad in the conference,” Kellar said. “And, they have played without the services of their top blue-chip quarterback, Lawrence Williams of Wichita Falls, in two of the three games.” “Tech will have a balanced at tack, though they will try to run first and throw second,” Kellar added. “If we can contain the run, they will take to the air.” In last week’s loss to the Rice Owlets, Kellar felt, “We could not maintain a good running attack between the tackles. Rice had one of the toughest defenses we have seen so far with their two de fensive tackles. Another place we let down was in protecting the passer, which caused us to be inconsistent in our offense. “I was pleased, however, with the way the team didn’t give up when they had no chance of win ning the game,” he emphasized. “We fought back and that showed a lot of poise by our players, and that is a good sign in these young kids.” Last year the Picadors took a resounding 43-21 win over the out-manned freshman squad. Tech finished the year with a perfect 5-0 record while the Fish ended up 0-5. In last year’s game, in juries forced A&M to start 13 players who were not even on scholarship. Tech’s pi’oblems this year have been in the ability of moving the football. They have gained only 689 yards total offense in the three games, placing them last in the conference with a 229.7 per game average. The rushing attack has been adequate, gaining 478 yards for a 159 yard average, though the passing has netted but 211 yards for only a 70 yard average. Only team to do worse in that category is Texas, who has never been touted for their pass ing ability, who has a 47.3 yard average in three games. Their main strength lies in de fending against the run, having held the opposition to but 148 yards per game. In pass defense, the Picadors have held the op ponent to 132 yards per game. The Fish trail in both categories. “To win the game, we’ve got to move the football on the ground,” Kellar said. “We can’t rely on our passing attack to bring us through. We've got to move the football with consistency.” “We’ve also got to stop their running game first and then try to stop the tight end, Gary Rogers of Andrews, when they go the passing route,’ Kellar said. Leading ground gainer for the Picadors is Hoskins who has car ried the ball 28 times for 143 yards. Runner-up in that depart ment is tailback Sammy Green who has carried 25 times for 113 yards. Leading receiver is Rogers who has caught eight of the 15 completions from the quarter- backing crew of Williams and Featherston, for 141 yards and BATT PICKS CHAMPION Full 4-ply nylon cord body A great tire buy at these low prices! Young football fan gets Texas ticket Ten-year-old Gerry Diaz, son of Johnny Diaz of College View Apartments, is lucky to have Gene Stallings for a friend. With the athletic department enforcing its ticket policy, Gerry, who has been to every home gai" e of the Aggies for the past two years, was not going to be able to see the A&M-Texas game Thanksgiving Day. Not to be frustrated, he wrote the Aggie coach a letter, asking how he could get a ticket to see the game. Having written the letter before the armchair tickets came out, he was sent a fr ee reserved ticket to the game by Stallings, who told him to save his money for another project.
