TEXAS Dabbs publishes third edition of Bengali-English dictionary A third edition of "A Short Bengali-English, English-Bengali Dictionary” by Dr. Jack A. Dabbs of A&M has been published. The first two editions, in 1962 and 1965, were on shelves only a short time before the supply was exhausted. Orders for the book came from all parts of the world, but larg est purchasers have been Ameri cans working in East Pakistan and the Peace Corps. Sales also were indicated at newstands and book stores in Calcutta and Dacca. Dabbs said the third edition incorporates 1,800 new entries, with 2,522 in the Bengali section and 2,250 in the English section. Printed by the A&M Press, it uses special type required for the Eastern language, acquired by Dabbs for the first printing through a Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) grant. A special university grant made third edition printing pos sible. Income from dictionary sales paid for help of Bengali editorial assistants. In writing several years, the publication is the work of Dabbs, several Ben gali speakers, wives of East Pak istani students at A&M and under sponsorship of the university's International Programs Office. Dabbs saw the need for a bi lingual dictionary in phonetic transcription during a 1960 visit in East Bengal (East Pakistan). A&M interest in East Bengal comes from many years contact between the university and East Pakistan educational system through government grants and contacts through the Interna tional Programs Office, directed by Dr. Jack D. Gray. RSC reorganized into separate laboratories A&M’s Remote Sensing Cen ter has been organized into five laboratories to better serve an ex panded professional staff and new projects, announced RSC Di rector Dr. John W. Mayo Jr., who re cently joined the university from Lockheed Electronics in Atlanta, Ga., is director of the Optics Lab oratory. Dr. Mayo serves on the electrical engineering faculty. Dr. W. P. James is director of the Environmental Quality Lab oratory. Formerly with Oregon State University, he is on the faculty of the Civil Engineering Department’s Environmental En gineering Division. John A. Schell, formerly RSC engineering research coordina tor, has been promoted to direc tor of the Data Analysis Labora tory. > Dr. Rouse heads the Microwave and Infrared Systems Labora tory. In addition to the five internal laboratories, the RSC maintains its affiliation with several lab oratories operated within various academic departments, Dr. Rouse pointed out. Associates provide the center with an enormous reserve of spe cialized talent, Dr. Rouse said, which is utilized to complement the research conducted within the RSC labs and to conduct inde pendent remote sensing research projects.
