THE BATTALION Page 2 College Station, Texas Tuesday, October 12, 1971 CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle Listen up Batt editor is called a trouble maker “We’ve always been Columbus fans and we decided to celebrate in Lubbock! We had no idea it would not be a school holiday and that we’d miss your class!” Firemen’s training school brings 48 plant workers F 1 nr Ft- o xr -PinrVit- -it*c*4"i»-S a 1 -Pii*** c? i Forty-eight Bay City Celanese Plant employes travel to A&M this week for a special industrial fire-fighting course at the na tion’s finest firemen training facility. Two groups of 24 men each will participate in the two-day ses sions. The first group trained Monday and today, followed by fight four industrial fire situ ations—a process unit, loading terminal and transport dock, overhead pipe rack and pressure pit fires. Bulletin Board Tonight SCOPE will meet in room 3-D a second group Thursday and of the Memorial Student Center Friday. at 7:30. Editor’s note: A copy of the following letter was sent to President Jack K. Williams and the Former Students Associa tion. Editor: Today I read the latest copy of the ‘Battalion’. I do believe that we are long past due to have someone who will make the effort and take the time to stop the continual, seem ingly planned, effort on the part of the editor and his so-called friends and advisors at sniping away at the ‘Cadet Corps’ and all of the other old and meaning ful traditions of the wonderful school that I and many others like me love so much. I have, for some years, read the ‘Batt’ faithfully to keep up with the things that were going on on the campus. But in the last two years we seem to have had editors who delight in fomenting trouble and trying to cause prob lems among the students them selves. There is no reason, real or imagined, as to why the present editor should go out of his way to make the remarks he does and stir up trouble unless it is for pure hatred. I have talked to several of the students there now, and I know that all he has done is to cause dissention, anger and deep con cern because of his attitude in print. For myself, I am just damned angry that anyone like him can use the ‘Batt’ for his own purposes to cause trouble. About all that the editor has done is to alienate portions of the student body and make some of the former students, like me, angry. Just in case there is any ques tion about where I stand you can find me in the 1949 annual—page 99—among the civilians. Also, I believe that some con certed effort on the part of the school is necessary to eliminate the other factions that go out of their way to promote dissention and cause problems. Yours for a better Texas A&M, Pierre G. Norm and ’49 John R. Rauch, instructor for the Texas Firemen’s Training School here, is coordinating the training with Fred VanWie of Bay City, Celanese fire brigade officer. Purpose of the school, Rauch said, is to give the company vol unteer department actual experi ence in fighting large fires under controlled conditions. Since you are not specific I must assume that you are re ferring to my editorial “A&M and change.” In that editorial I do not at tack the Corps. I point out that growth is causing great amounts of change on this cam pus and that this change means that the old order is passing and that a new one will take its place. Call 845-4671 for information ing trouble,” “pure hatred,” or “promoting dissention.” This is reality. If you had troubled yourself to read the back issues of The Battalion, you would have no ticed that I have in the past stuck up for the Corps on oc casion. I have even received a letter from the Military Sci ence Department thanking me for “ a good press” in past issues. Is this “fomenting trou ble,” “pure hatred,” or “pro moting dissention?” I will plead guilty to foment ing thought. If you dislike the idea of Aggies using their minds and the results of such action, then I can only pity you. As for your last statement, otherwise known as the High way 6 runs-both-ways Syn drome, you might find a place for it in Red China, not, I hope and pray, in the United States. See the letter below.—Ed. ★ ★ ★ Editor: This is to express my appre ciation and my compliments upon the editorial in The Battalion of Oct. 6, 1971, entitled “A&M and change.” I am 100 per cent in accord and feel the editorial states the situation in a clear and constructive manner. Being of the class of ’21— possibly this year of ’71 is my year after all—50 years later— I am still looking forward. Congratulations and wishes for your continued forward thinking. Ted Mohle ’21 ★ ★ ★ Editor: A Yell Practice was held Thurs day at 6:00 p.m. in the Corps area in place of the regular Yell Practice scheduled for 10:30. The only notification that we received of the change was a small article on the fourth page of The Bat talion, which came out about two hours before the Yell Practice. When we noticed the article, we just barely had enough time to rush across campus with the few people who were in the dorm at the time. Now, I admit that there are several dorms that usually don’t attend such events; however, Walton Hall has been going, and I have noticed some of the other dorms at every Yell Practice ex cept this one. I believe that those other dorms would have also at tended this one, along with more of us, if the Yell Leaders Com mittee had sent out notification. Why did they tell the 2,500 “Twelfth-men” in the Corps and ignore the 11,000 “Twelfth-men” on the rest of the campus? Did they want the Civilians to attend ? Do they really care about Texas A&M University or the Corps? James K. Goode ’73 Resident Advisor Walton Hall be posted on civilian bulletin boards.” The reason for the time change was that the team was to eat with the Corps that night. Also, the Fish game would have, and did, end so late that 10:30 yell practice in front of Henderson Hall would have been impractical.—Ed. ★ ★ ★ Editor: The Student Senate has ap pointed a committee. That’s nice. But still some of us feel we will not be getting any fairer treat ment from this university. To avoid The Shaft WE must pull OUR heads out. Too often we just read the letters in the Batt, grumble and wish the Dean of Students would disappear. The 12th Man is not going to change things for us. What are we going to do about • aF/vrm I * TV V, tv. it; storm the Bastille, join the SDS, or maybe even pressure the Student Senate into action? I don’t know about you w I am not going to let Mr. Groff and Mr. Stallings sell my ticket. I plan to procure my $1.27 ticket every time I am entitled to it and if I don’t use it that’s too bad. I also think I’ll go down and de mand my contribution to the Uni- versity Laundry back. So what if I don’t get it back. They at least will know that I am tired of being had by their monopoly. ■ That’s about all I can say except, I golly gee fellows I hope I’m not alone.
