Coulter Bryan over the Texas Tech Red Raiders could turn things around for A&M. Boasting a strong defensive unit, experience, and a return threat in Hugh McElroy, but an offense that hasn’t been consistent the last three times out, the Ag gies will face a squad that had title hopes before the season be gan. Tech was supposed to have a strong offense and a questionable defense, but it has been the other way around for Jim Carlen’s Raiders. Lex James is ready for the bat tle, after dislocating his thumb against Nebraska, and missing last week’s game. Mark Green and Tim Trimmier were unable to get the offense rolling against Cin cinnati, and the sophomore duo will be backing James up. Doug Neill and Marc Black probably will get the nod at the running back spots, with Steve Texas-Oklahoma and Bay lor-Arkansas battles headline fifth week of Southwest football By BILL HENRY Week number five is upon us with another batch of touch-and- go games. For two teams it is the conference opener and for anoth er, it is two straight weeks of “Super Bowl.” The Baylor Bears entertain the Arkansas Razorbacks in Waco for a night game. The Razorbacks are 1-0 in conference play with last week’s convincing 49-15 hu miliation of TCU. For the Bears, it will be the first SWC tilt of 1971. The Bears are 1-2 in non conference with losses to Kansas and Miami and a victory over In diana. Si Southall is out for the Bears this week but it really doesn’t matter. Arkansas is get ting ready for Big Shootout No. Ill next week in Little Rock against the Longhorns. The annual fiasco is here al ready. Texas-OU weekend, which is usually the top money-making enterprise for the Dallas Police Dept., unveils itself at 2 p.m. in the Cotton Bowl. The game will be televsied by KDFW in Dallas and Channel 7 in Austin (which can be picked up on the B-CS cable). This is the year for Okla homa to do its thing as it is the senior year for such superlatives as Jack Mildren. For Texas it is the year of the sophomore and for this week, again, the Long horns will be going without the services of top quarterback Eddie Phillips. The key to this game will be defenses of Texas. OU picked up 518 yards on the ground in its 33-20 victory over USC. Texas offense will be sub-par and the defense will be facing its toughest competition of the young season. This one will be a barn burner. Southern Methodist travels to Colorado Springs for an after noon contest with the Air Force Falcons. Southern Methodist is 1-2 with losses to Missouri and Oklahoma while the Air Force is flying high. The Falcons defeated Missouri in the first game of the season, 7-6, on television. The Mustangs lost to the same club, quite convincingly, 24-0. SMU must get its offense going. Even last week in its victory over out classed New Mexico State, the Mustangs could barely get off the ground. It is back to the Wishbone for Coach Hayden Fry’s Mustangs after a weeks vacation for the Power I in the victory. Air Force still uses the airlanes like T-38’s and should show the Mustangs some tricks. The Oklahoma State Cowboys visit TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium for a night contest with the Horn ed Frogs. A couple of weeks ago, Oklahoma State almost pulled an upset against Arkansas. In the last quarter, however, the roof fell in and the Razorbacks rallied for a 31-10 win. Last week in Fayetteville. Varner & Sons Jewelers North Gate 846-5816 talks otherwise turned on caus tic Communist assessments of the South Vietnamese presidential election Sunday and bitter invec tive addressed to Porter. Porter recalled last Monday’s U.S. House of Representatives resolution, which called for hu mane treatment of American pris oners, adherence to the Geneva Convention on prisoners of war and repatriation of the sick and wounded. He asked the Commu nists to provide information on American servicemen that North Vietnam and the Viet Cong “know to be dead.” The North Vietnamese spokes man, Nguyen Thanh Le, was ask ed by newsmen if Porter’s request for information on dead American soldiers would be met. He re ferred to a list published by North Vietnam last December, which included 20 dead and 339 in prison camps. He asserted the list was still up to date. U.S. officials fear that out of a total of 1,618 Americans Wash ington says are missing in South east Asia as many as 1,000 may be dead. While only 20 may have died in North Vietnamese prison camps, the United States feels that North Vietnam must have knowledge of many more dead. Some may have died in plane crashes during raids over North Vietnam. The Viet Cong never has giv en a list of prisoners it holds or those who have died and declined to do so Thursday. Porter, until recently U.S. am bassador to South Korea, told the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong: “The time has come for you to follow the example of other divid ed countries by opening a peace ful dialogue with your fellow Viet namese for the benefit of your people. If you can bring your selves to that, it would rekindle the hopes of all men of good will in the future of these talks.” A spokesman said that by “di vided countries,” Porter meant North and South Korea and East and West Germany. There was no reported reac tion to Porter’s suggestion to the Vietnamese Communists. They have long refused to hold talks with the South Vietnamese gov ernment, calling its leaders “U.S. lackeys.” Pawn Merchandise For Sale Tape Recorders Mech. Drawing Sets Guitars & Amps. At tight end, Homer May will he playing his first game in Lubbock since becoming an Ag gie. The 6-2, 232 pounder grad uated from Monterrey High there. His substitute is Mitch Robert son, the punter. Robertson is playing his first game since be coming a father Monday. The tackles will be Buster Cal laway and either Skip Kuehn or Ralph Sacra. Ted Smith has been moved back to center, behind Robert Gerasimowicz. Leonard Forey and Todd Christopher man the guard positions, with Mike Park ready to fill in. Defensively, the Ags have Max Bird and Kent Finley at the ends, ahead of Mike Sweat and Dan Peoples. Boice Best and Van Odom, both having excellent years, are the tackles, with James Dubcak back from an injury. He was hurt in the LSU game, but is ready for action this week. Bill Wiebold is the starting middle guard, and Odom may play some there, too. The linebackers will be Steve Luebbehusen and Grady Hoer- mann, with Dennis Carruth and Mike Lord behind them. Lord will he playing for the first time since hurting his leg the week before the Nebraska game. Lee Hitt, who has been a stand out in the last two games, and Bland Smith are the cornerhacks. David Hoot and Brad Dusek will be at the safeties. All have played well thus far, and all are winners of the Aggie Star. Mike Bellar will be kicking off, and Pat McDermott will be kick ing placements. Robertson lost his conference punting lead last week, but he still has a fine 40.0 average. The Aggies go to Jones Sta dium with the hopes of repeating 1967, when the win over Tech started a seven-game winning streak and the conference and Cotton Bowl championships. Tech is already 0-1 in SWC play, hav ing lost to Texas in Austin. Make your big ■ trade at Cade! 1309 Texas Ave. Bryan,Texas
