The 600- item collection is notable for va rious reasons, among them that Dobie inscribed numerous items with sometimes pungent com ments about people and books. “This gift is further proof of Mr. Dykes’ love for books and Texas A&M,” President Williams said in announcing the gift last spring. The Dobie materials were as sembled by Dykes over the last 40 years. The collection includes 500 titles and copies of varied editions of 26 Dobie books. Also included are booklets, magazine articles, broadsides and materials edited by Dobie, plus publisher’s catalogs featuring the author and his writings. The Dobie items include titles that supplement standard Dobie bibliographies. Dykes also assembled the Jeff Dykes Range Livestock Collec tion. With the Dobie materials added to it, the collection now to tals 5,969 items. It is used by A&M faculty and students and visitors from other campuses, basically for scholarly research. “Frank knew and loved an area that extended far beyond the boundaries of his native state, an area that included a sizable part of Mexico,” Dykes wrote of his friend. “Frank’s influence on the collectors of Western Americana has been tremendous.” equipment donated to A&M A&M profs write soph English book A new book written by three A&M English professors is in current use in a sophomore Eng lish course. “The Unity of English: Five Basic Focal Points” is the work of Dr. Carroll D. Cook, A&M Dean of Geosciences, is the author of an article entitled “The Flow of Energy in an Industrial Society” published in the September Sci entific American. The article traces the flow of energy through the U. S. system from production of energy com modities to the ultimate conver sion of energy into work for va rious industrial end products and waste heat. Noting that energy consump tion has been increasing recently at a rate of five percent a year, or four times faster than the U. S. population, Dr. Cook points out that the greatest increases in consumption have been in house hold, commercial and transporta tion uses. The article also compares the ratio of energy consumption to gross national product and the technical efficiency of various energy systems. Long range en vironmental problems associated with the increased consumption of energy in the United States, particularly the disposal of waste heat produced in the generation of electricity, are discussed also. ★ ★ ★ German consul tours TAMU campus Dr. Hasso Von Maltzahn, con sul of Germany assigned to Hous ton, toured the A&M campus Thursday to get first-hand infor mation on academic and student exchange programs. He also wants to plan activities to give A&M fac ulty and students a better un derstanding of German politics, economics, culture and its univer sities. Dr. Von Maltzahn said German students have opportunities to at tend United States universities under programs similar to the Fulbright Scholarships. You can look through any newspaper and see water bed ads everywhere. With prices from $18.00 on up. And it’s got to be a little confusing. But the simple fact is that there are too many things that can go wrong with a cheap fly-by-nightmare water bed. And too many things that can happen with a good one. One that you won’t have to lie awake worrying about. Because a true water bed is a serious piece of furniture, without any hazards or hang-ups. A bed that is meant to be functional, satisfying, and fun. And that’s the kind of water bed we sell. Because we know the difference between a good piece of merchandise and bad. And we’ve learned that customers don’t like to be fooled or mishandled. So we’ll sell you a serious water bed. A complete water bed. Not in bits and pieces. We’ll quote you a real price, including installation or free delivery out of that area. And we’ll sell you whatever size water bed you want, single, queen, or king. And we’ll guarantee it for life. If you’re serious about a water bed, come talk to the people who know about things to sleep on. People who will sell you a serious water bed. Hours 1 P.M.—9 P.M.
