Stallings started the ball roll ing at an 8 a.m. meeting in the Lettermen’s Lounge of G. Rollie White Coliseum. Freelance inter views with the players followed at Kyle Field and the meeting ended back at the Lettermen’s Lounge with players being sent in two or three at a time to answer the barrage of questions coming from the scribes. Lex James, questioned exten sively about his bout with in fectious hepatitis, left no doubt in the minds of the interviewers about his condition this fall. “This is the best I’ve felt since I became ill. I have more spring in my movements, I have been throwing better and I am at the weight best suited for my style of play (187 lbs.). I am also pleased with my recovery in this short period of time; my cousin had it for over a year,” he ex plained. James is now fighting a battle against a sprained thumb received in last Thurs day’s scrimmage. Second team quarterback Mark Green, sophomore from Odessa, also injured in scrimmage, spoke to the sports writers about being so publicized this soon. “The way I look at it is that the more publicity I get the more I must work at making the comments correct. However, I’d much rather make the publicity myself on the football field than read it in the newspapers and magazines,” Green commented. When asked what he needs to improve on be fore being a top quarterback, he said, “I need to work on being more of a team leader, read the opposition’s defenses better and get some experience in real game conditions.” Doug Neill, two year varsity letterman at fullback, made a big impression on the newsmen by having two children. Asked if they put any pressures on him at home, he commented, “The only problem that ever arises is at bedtime. Sometimes they make it hard for me to go to sleep.” Neill was also asked how having a wife helps him during the season. “It gives me a chance to get away from it all, really. I can go home and Terry will kinda console me and get my mind off of a bad practice or an extra tough workout.” Asked if any conflicts arise, Neill said, “Sure, but Terry is a great foot ball fan and loves me playing. It puts a gerat demand on her, however, with me being gone as much as I am with road trips, BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day 51 per word 4C per word each additional day Minimum charge—754 Classified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion FOR SALE iap size, 7 1/8. Van Odom, two-year starter at defensive guard from Corsicana, says about this year’s club, “The offensive line is probably the most improved phase of our team, the offensive backfield has a lot of depth and should be great at all positions.” Asked to elaborate on the line, Odom said, “This year they are not conscious about their technique. They come off the line real fast and get you out of the area.” Odom was kid ded about his weight fluctuations from year to year and asked how he keeps his wardrobe in shape. “They either fit tight or baggy,” chuckled Odom. Skip Kuehn, center transfer from Ranger JC, was asked to comment on the difference of the two types of football. “At Ranger we had three-a-day workouts in Lamka succeeds Rex Kern By GEORGE STRODE Associated Press Writer COLUMBUS, Ohio <A>) — Don Lamka strolled into Woody Hayes’ office three days after Ohio State’s Rose Bowl loss to Stanford with a football under his arm. “Coach, I want to be your quarterback,” said the Cleveland senior who had been a defensive specialist in his first two college seasons. Hayes, the dean of Big Ten coaches, was faced with the de cision of replacing Rex Kern, who had led the Buckeyes to a 27-2 record in three seasons. Lamka made it for him. Hayes is launching his 21st season with the Buckeyes. Ohio State, 9-1 last season and fifth in The Associated Press poll, will revert to a more conserva tive, ground-conscious attack with Lamka at the helm. Originally recruited as a quar terback, Lamka served as All- America Jack Tatum’s replace ment at cornerhack in 1970. He was a linebacker in his sopho more campaign. The Buckeyes, gunning for a fourth straight Big Ten title or co-title, will have 15 new starters when they face Iowa in a con ference opener at home Saturday, Sept. 11. The offense has only tackle John Hicks and All-Big Ten cen ter Tom DeLeone back as starters. TRY BATTALION CLASSIFIED Pawn Merchandise For Sale Tape Recorders Mech. Drawing Sets Guitars & Amps. Prac tice is tougher here, however, be cause you play against a lot tougher players,” he said. Asked what he gained by going to a junior college, Kuehn said, “I gained experience, size and con fidence by playing up there and it also helped me learn basically good study habits.” Asked why he chose A&M instead of other arship, the former Grand Prairie schools that offered him a schol- prep said, “I have been an Aggie since I was a kid, my parents loved the place and my uncle graduated from here.” The biggest obstacle for the Ags to overcome will be the lack of depth in the defensive second ary. The first team looks real strong, but, if injuries hit, the backfield corps will have a def inite problem. Lee Hitt of Fort Worth holds down all four spots on the second team. Everyone involved with Press Day was quite pleased with its outcome. The sports writers got their stories and pictures, the players got some attention and Mark Green had his nineteenth birthday. iff S*! ADMIT ONE THIS WAS howdy YOUR LIFE! | party FRIDAY.
