Six of the awards were won by the news and radio editors, in cluding an excellent rating for press service to dailies and a good rating for press service to week lies. Also, good ratings for maga zine serivce and a filmed televis ion feature and a very good rat ings on a series of black and white photographs and for radio spot announcements. Three awards, two very good ratings and one good, were made to a popular type Extension pub lication on grain sorghums and a general or miscellaneous Ex periment Station publication, titled, “Impact.” The department’s quarterly Texas Agricultural Progress, received a rating of very good. ★ ★ ★ Area teacher joins Ag Information staff Mrs. Lela Edwards of College Station, journalism and English teacher in Bryan and College Sta tion schools since 1958, has joined the Agricultural Information De partment as an assistant editor of publications. Dr. William Tedrick, editor and department head, said Mrs. Ed wards’ duties will cover writing and editing bulletins, brochures and leaflets. She also will assist Texas Agricultural Extension Service agents in use of com munications media. Mrs. Edwards taught journal ism and English in the Bryan public schools from 1958 to 1967. She also was student newspaper and yearbook advisor and handled school system publicity during that period. From 1968 to 1970, she taught journalism and English for the A&M Consolidated schools. Ad ditional duties were those of student newspaper advisor and handling school publications and publicity. ★ ★ ★ ’70 grad gets post in voter signup drive Garry Mauro of Austin was named Friday as college coordi nator for Countdown ’72, sponsors of the voter registration confer ence and workshop scheduled for Aug. 7 and 8 in Austin. Mauro graduated from Texas A&M University in 1970. ★ ★ ★ CS group receives federal grant Gov. Preston Smith has an nounced his approval during the past week of a community action grant of $48,000 in new federal funds to Brazos County Commun ity Action Committee Inc. in Col lege Station for neighborhood service centers and family plan ning. Sanders Letbetter, assistant di rector and business manager of the student center, has been ap pointed to the International Re lations Committee of the Asso ciation of College Unions-Inter- national. ★ ★ ★ 5 Texas lawmakers honored at banquet Five Texas legislators were named honorary members of the State Firemen’s and Fire Mar shals’ Association of Texas here Wednesday night at the Texas Firemen’s Training School Ban quet. Engraved plaques were pre sented to state senators A. M. Aikin Jr. of Paris, J. P. Word of Meridian and Murray Watson of Waco and representatives W. S. Heatly Jr. of Paducah and John Traeger of Seguin. The association previously had honored only seven men with honorary memberships during the past 95 years. Fred J. Benson, dean of engineering, and Jay W. Stevens of San Francisco, Calif., retired fire prevention chief of the National Board of Fire Un derwriters, are the only living honorees from previous presen tations. ★ ★ ★ Training school chief honored Chief Instructor Henry D. The award is considered the prestige honor for the nation’s fire service personnel. ★ ★ ★ TEA awards A&M $39,424, asks help The Texas Education Agency has Awarded Texas A&M a $39,424 one-year renewable con tract to provide technical assist ance to the state’s vocational ed ucation programs. Heading the program is Dr. Dale Gutcher, associate profes sor of industrial education, who joined the A&M faculty this summer from Colorado State University. He was project di rector for the vocational educa tion department at CSU. He will provide consulting services for preparation of fund ing proposals, review proposals before submission, review in- service training of vocational personnel and work to up-grade teaching' competence. ★ ★ ★ Texaco promotes former student Texaco Inc., has announced that O. F. Sebesta has been elected president of Texaco Pro duction Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary. Sebesta graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering in 1938. He joined Texaco that same year as a roustabout in the Producing Department.
