m-- .. THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, May 4, 1971 Woods high point man Owls slip by Ags for track win I By JOHN CURYLO It took injuries and some bad luck for the Texas Aggie track team to relinquish its Southwest Conference title, and even then the Rice Owls could only manage a half point more than A&M after 16 events. Rockie Woods became the eighth man in league history to be high point man twice, tying the second highest output with 17'/2 points. A big disappointment came when Marvin Mills could not qualify in the 100 and 220 due to a pulled muscle, but the real heartbreaker was Curtis’ injury while running the 220. Woods got big wins in the 120 yard high hurdles and the 100, but he was nipped in the 220. Adding to this his anchor leg of the winning 440 yard relay team, the San Angelo senior finished his career in fine fashion. His 13.7 in the hurdles was good for a new SWC and A&M record. He also had a 9.5 in the 100 and a 21.1 in the 220, being narrowly edged by SMU’s Joe Pouncy. Another conference record was Ben Greathouse’s high jump of 6-1114 Friday. The Aggie junior took first, with teammate Marvin Taylor getting second at 6-9. This made the high jump the best point-getter of the meet for A&M. The Maroon tracksters got five firsts, with the victories in the 100, high hurdles, high jump, and sprint relay, plus Mills’ win in his specialty, the 440. The world record holder was clocked in 46.1. The 440 relay was the first event of Saturday’s running finals. The unit of iSteve Barre, Curtis, Donny Rogers, and Woods proved thrilling with their 40.5. This was the third straight year that A&M won the sprint relay, and their eleventh win of the season. The pole vault started Friday morning at 11, but was over with by 2 p.m., which has to be some kind of record too. Rice’s Dave Roberts passed to 16.0, which he cleared on his first attempt. He then missed three consecutive at tempts at 16-6, ending his action for the day. The Aggies’ Harold McMahan finished second, also clearing 16-0, but Roberts was awarded first because he started at a greater height. Robert Hoffman was fourth at 15-0, and Larry Mc- Intrye was fifth, 14-6, to make this the only even in which A&M got three of the five point places. Rounding out the field event scoring, Marc Black was third in the javelin with a heave of 220-11. Rice’s Jim Pearce won the event at 241-3, and Texas’ Walt Cham berlain came in second, 225-7. Rice led after the field events, 22'/2-20, with Texas getting only 101/2* A sweep of the discus got the Owls the bulk of their points, but a tie for fifth in the high jump gave them a half-point, which ended up being the winning margin. When it was time for the mile relay, the Aggies had 56 points, and Rice had 54 V2, with Texas out of it at 491/2* The final event is the Owls’ gravy, and A&M was without ace anchor man Mills. Still, no one can say they didn’t try, as Robert Brew led off, fol lowed by Don Kellar, David Mor ris, and Willie Blackmon. The time was a valiant 3:10.8, com pared to the winning mark of 3:09.3 of the Houston school. Texas was third, as Dave Morton had a split of 45.2, after a bad start. Kellar was third in the 440 yard hurdles, being timed in 51.4, the same as Larry Eubanks of SMU, who was judged to be second. Mike Cronholm of Rice broke his own record, finishing in 50.2. Frank Ybaro was third in the three mile, running a 14:16.7. Edgar Harvey ran a 14.4 in the high hurdles to get fifth place. This was quite a performance in a field with such runners as Woods, Gordon Hughes of Texas, Larry McBride of TCU, and Jack Faubion of Rice. Rogers ran his century in 9.7 to come in fifth, also. Difficulties for the Aggies, in addition to the injuries were being blanked in the shot put, long jump, discus, mile run, and the 880. (All photos by Mike Rice) Veriato wins league golf By CLIFFORD BROYLES Texas Aggies sophomore golf er Steve Veriato fired par on fifteen holes, birdied two and bogied one Friday morning to pull to a eight stroke lead after 54 holes and coasted to a six stroke victory Friday afternoon for the Southwest Conference medal golf championship on the A&M Course. Veriato’s round of 69 followed up Thursday’s rounds of 67 and 64 and gave him a 8 stroke lead over teammate Tommy Johnson with 18 holes to play. He played the final 18 in a three over 73 but needed only play for the sure shots with the big margin and was never pressed. Stan Altgelt of Southern Met hodist had the hottest hand in both rounds Friday when he whipped out a 68 in the first 18 and finished up with a 69 to pass Johnson for second place honors with a 72 hole total of 279, one under par. Johnson had a pair of 72’s Fri day to finish with a 280 and third place. He had the lead after the tourneys first round with a 65 but closed with a 71 on his second round. Jim Cisne of Arkansas also closed strong with a 69 on the final eighteen holes to place fourth at 281 and teammate Mike Mosser closed with a 68 to finish at 287. Jerry Gatti of Texas Christian and Jim Whitteker of team cham pion Texas Tech also closed with 68’s in the final round. Gatti had final score of 285 and Whitteker 286.
