GERS 1 ►AY 9:30 Chatter of teletype keys will cease to echo through the west hall of the Memorial Student Cen ter here April 30. The Western Union office lo cated there will close then. Carmen F. Tax, manager of the office since it was moved to the MSC from the Exchange Store in 1954, said the closing “is purely a cost thing.” “Operational overhead has grown to where it’s losing prop osition,” the 41-year Western Union veteran commented. “The high cost of operation has priced us out of business.” He said the service will be transferred from the MSC to Carroll’s Corner in the North Gate business area as an agency office. Telegraph service there, as in the Bryan bus station, will be a seven-day-a-week, after hours operation. The office will bow out with a flourish, however. The closing will coincide with the Southwest Conference Track and Field Meet, to be held April 30 and May 1 at Kyle Field. In 1965, the last time the con ference meet was hosted by Texas A&M, the Tax-managed telegraph operation moved 25,000 words a day for the two-day event. I’ve found they’re easy to know. I feel we’ve got a really good rapport with the students, and I hope they feel my office is someplace to go, talk things over, and get action.” Much of this, he said, is done through Ed Cooper, who was recently appointed special assis tant for student affairs. Williams described him as a “man who has strength and vigor about him when he moves.” The president said he is proud to be part of Texas A&M and that he thinks A&M “has certain ly exceeded every expectation I had for the administration and the excellence of the faculty.” He said one of his biggest prob lems now, aside from getting five new extension stations going and working on cooperative programs with Baylor, is the money situ ation. He said the problem is a “tight money situation for higher edu cation all over the country as well as in the state.” He described it as one of the roughest times for higher education in the last few decades. Heaton, Dean Admissions and Records ; handled yards-long, multi-signa ture telegrams from the MSC of fice to Randy Matson at Mexico for the 1968 Olympics, to Presi dents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson and the Fish Drill team in Washington, D. C., for national championship competition. The office formerly was lo cated in the railroad depot re moved across from the west cam pus entrance three years ago. For several years, the campus Western Union facility was situ ated on the second floor of the Exchange Store building. “We were switching over from the old Morse key to the tele printer when the office was moved to the MSC,” Tax said. “At that time, our flow was 25 per cent automatic.” It became fully automatic in 1955 and presently includes a half dozen major pieces of equip ment supervised by Tax. “There’s never been a dull mo ment,” he observed. We want people who think for themselves... and who want to serve others. A successful insurance agent is independent. There’s no ceiling on his earnings. He has his own clients. Makes his own decisions concerning them. And since he is successful nobody argues over his way of getting things done.
