Gene Simmons, Texas A&M graduate now chief scien tist at the NASA Manned Space craft Center in Houston, will be guest speaker at the A&M Chap ter, Society of the Sigma Xi annual installation and Awards Banquet Friday, March 26. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. Tickets are available at $4.20 each from Dr. J. E. Martinez, Civil Engineering De partment. Dr. Simmons, 1949 electrical engineering graduate of A&M, will speak on “The Moon: Old and New.” He will present the facts which have been added to our knowledge of the moon by the Apollo missions and what is expected to be learned from fu ture moon missions. exceptional achievement through participation in special technical projects. Jones new president of education group A newly organized Southwest ern Association for Adult and Continuing Education has elected Dr. Earl Jones of A&M as its first president. The association was formed last weekend in Dallas among representatives of 10 universities and five state departments of education. Purpose of the association will be information exchange and pro motion of sounder programs in teacher training and the field, explained Jones, adult education director of College of Education. He attended the organizational meeting with Dr. Donald Clark, associate dean of education. (AP Wirephoto) Journalists to discuss student press Student press problems, space- science news and the future of magazines are subjects for eight communications experts address ing a journalism conference here Friday. Approximately 230 representa tives from 15 colleges in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisi ana begin assembling Thursday night for the one-day 41st annual Southwest Journalism Congress and Student Press Club meetings at the Ramada Inn. Apollo 13 lunar module pilot Fred W. Haise Jr. will speak at the awards banquet Friday night and show photography from the aborted six-day mission last year. First, second and third place certificates will be presented at the banquet in 27 newspaper categories and five magazine categories. Speakers scheduled for the morning and afternoon sessions are Percy Foreman, Houston attorney; Alton L. Blakeslee, Associated Press science editor; Anson Mount, Playboy Magazine public affairs manager; Hugh Aynesworth, Newsweek Magazine Houston bureau chief; Brian Duff, NASA Manned Spacecraft Center public affairs officer; Dean Wayne A. Danielson, Uni- verstiy of Texas at Austin, and Jim Thompson, Taylor Publish ing Co., Dallas. C. J. Leabo, Journalism De partment head, is president of the congress and senior Frank Griffis of Big Spring is Student Press Club president. Asst. Prof. William C. Harri son, conference director, esti mated the conference will draw 175 student journalists and 55 faculty advisors and teachers. The first general session begins at 10:30 a.m. It features Blakes lee and Duff discussing the han dling of space-science news. Foreman, internationally- known trial lawyer, is the noon luncheon speaker. Separate meetings are sched uled at 2 p.m. on student press problems. Thompson, former di rector of Detroit University pub lications, and several student editors will discuss problems with the Student Press Club. Dr. Danielson, a noted journalism re searcher, will meet at the same time with faculty advisors. He is dean of the UT School of Com munication. Mount and Aynesworth address the second general session at 3:45. They will discuss the future of magazines. A joint business meeting con cludes the program at 4:30. The awards banquet begins at 7 p.m. Students are scheduled to hold a dance following the ban quet and faculty advisors will be entertained informally at the Leabo home. Astronaut Haise is no stranger to journalism. He started as a paperboy in Biloxi, Miss., worked on the high school paper and while in high school covered sports for the Biloxi Daily Herald. He majored in journalism at Perkinston Junior College, serv ing as sports editor his freshman year and editor-in-chief his sophomore year. He also was the school's public relations man. During the summers he worked on the Biloxi Daily Herald, cov ering city hall, the police beat and conventions. The Korean war interrupted his studies and he became a Marine Corps pilot. He later graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Teams from Bryan, Dallas, Houston, Killeen, Bellaire, La redo, Galveston, San Antonio and Austin will vie for a 43-inch master trophy that resided in Laredo and Houston for the last two years. Laredo’s Martin High School Singing Cadets and the Milby High Muskets of Houston will be in the competition. They were the 1970 and 1969 champions, re spectively. Competition in inspection, basic and fancy phases will begin at 10 a.m. on the main drill field in front of the Memorial Student Center, announced John Hamil ton, president of the sponsoring Association of Former Fish Drill Team Members. The Fish Drill Team will perform an exhibition drill after the last high school team has completed competition marching. Presentation of first, second and third place trophies in each phase and the master trophy will follow. Each team will complete all meet requirements in succession. After inspection, the unit will report for basic marching, then the fancy phase, completing the sequence on side-by-side competi tion areas in about 30 minutes each. Junior invitational meet judg ing will be by Fish drill team advisors and members of the Association of Former FDT Mem bers. The association is sponsor ing the meet wtih the Comman dant’s Office and Departments of Military Science and Aerospace Studies. Teams in the competition are Allen Academy of Bryan; Bryan Adams and Lincoln High Schools on Dallas; Houston’s Robert E. Lee, Stephen F.
