THE BATTALION Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, March 4, 1971 Friday at 1 p. m. Aggies host St. Edwards in baseball twinbill By CLIFFORD BROYLES Battalion Sports Editor The Texas Aggie baseball team makes its second appear ance of the season Friday at 1 p.m. when it hosts St. Edwards University of Austin on Kyle Field. After that encounter, the Ag gies hit the road for the first time next Tuesday when they travel to Huntsville for a dou bleheader with Sam Houston State University. In Friday's twin bill, Coach Tom Chandler is expected to send righthander Charlie Kelley against St. Edwards in the first game and freshman lefthander Jackie Binks is slated to start the nine-inning second game. St. Edwards will be opening its season as it was snowed out of an opening twinbill Tuesday against Southern Methodist Uni versity in Dallas. Chandler said that Kelley and Binks, who both worked two in nings of relief in the doublehead er win over St. Mary’s last week, 4 \ \ iW \ w=» ,V base. R. J. Englert, defending SWC batting champion, will line up in left field after collecting three hits in six official turns Friday. Dave Elmendorf, the team’s leading hit collector with five opening day safeties, will bat third and play centerfield; Billy Hodge, all-Southwest Conference catcher, will bat fourth and catch. Hodge didn’t enjoy the hitting prosperity of his teammates as he collected only a pinch hit double in the second game after a hit less first. Yet he still picked up two runs batted in, including the one that won the first game when he was issued a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning. Jim Sampson, who had one for seven in the opening twinbill, will man right field. Sampson’s lone hit, a first inning double in the second game, drove home two of the Aggies’ five first inning runs in the nightcap. Chris Sans, who picked up three hits including two doubles against St. Mary’s, will bat sixth and play first base. Carroll Lilly is slated for the seventh spot in the order. The Aggie second baseman collected four hits in cluding two doubles and drove in three runs in his debut. Shortstop Jimmy Langford was hitless in his four trips in the opener and Kelley, the pitcher, will bat ninth. Chandler said that he was pleased with the aggresive play the Aggies displayed against St. Mary’s. “The first game we showed a tendency to be a little tight but then we got loosened up in the second game and really got ag gressive and swung the bat.” The Aggies’ aggressiveness paid off to the tune of a 12-5 second game win after taking the opener 2-1. The Aggies—now 2-0—have a 41-game schedule on tap for this season. On Tuesday the Aggies will be at Sam Houston, where they opened the season last year and dropped a doubleheader. The Bearkats are 1-3 for the season, having opened with the Univer sity of Texas at Austin in a four- game series. “We always learn from our series with Texas,” coach Bob Britt said. “Of course we get much of our early season jitters and its always good to play against one of the best. I saw some definite improvement after each game we played and our confidence came around.” Coach Chandler pointed out that the Bearkats have two out standing pitchers in Bud Whiley- man and David Burger. Whiley- man is due to pitch Frday against SMU, so its unlikely that the Aggies will see him. Burger is not scheduled for any of their three game series’ start ing assignments against SMU and could be on tap for the Aggie series. Sam Houston owns a 30-game win streak at home and if the SMU Mustangs don’t end the string over the weekend the Texas Aggies, who were victims twice last year, will have their chance beginning Tuesday after noon at 1 p.m. yi j / Netters face UCC Friday Tj'lri-Vi + Vi T f T, 1 <1 AT i c R. J. Englert will go “as far as they can go depending on the weather, how they feel and how many pitches they throw.” Kelley was the winning pitch er in the first game, pitching two frames in which he was touched for two hits and one run and re corded two strikeouts. Binks, making his college de but, was bothered by control problems in his first inning and Eighth ranked University of Corpus Christi will be the oppo sition for the Texas Aggies Fri day in a dual tennis match on varsity courts. Action is slated for 1:30 p.m. with UCC heavily favored, but the Aggies will be out to pull a major upset, and they know it’s possible since they toppled ninth- ranked Oral Roberts last week end in the UCC invitational. Corpus Christi finished second in its tournament and the Aggies were sixth. . Trinity, the second- ranked team in the country, won that tournament by defeating UCC and they’ll follow Corpus here with a dual match against the Aggies next Wednesday. Tennis fans will see some of the best tennis players in the country for these two matches. Coach Omar Smith says of the UCC match, “It will be a real test. We’ll be out going for fin- other big upset. We’re really go ing to be shooting for it.” play in the Corpus Christi tour ney. Fikes won all but one of his singles and all but one of his doubles matches while playing number two. He’ll meet Humphrey Hose, a top player from Venezuela, in the number one match. All of the UCC players are foreign players, Smith pointed out. They come mostly from South America and Mexico. Jon Ragland will play number two for the Aggies and matchup with Jorge Andrew. Mike Hick ey will draw Ken deKoning in the number three match for A&M. Dickie Fikes has been moved to number one player for the Aggies after his outstanding The number four singles match will have Tommy Connell facing Mark Boulle. Dan Courson will play Carlos Joffi in the fifth singles match. Oscar Sales will play the Aggies Lawton Park in the final singles match. Coach Omar Smith said that his first doubles team would be Fikes and Ragland with Hickey and Courson will be on the sec ond doubles team. Connell and Park are slated to vie for A&M in the third set. ♦ _ W J i>Jt Charlie Kelley totalled three walks and two hits allowed in two rounds of work. He struck out two and was touched for three runs. If they are relieved, Chandler said, he will use either Paul Czerwinski, Pat Jamison and Bruce Katt, who also saw action against the Rattlers, or fresh man Jim Wallace. “The best thing about our pitching thus far has been that we’ve had no shoulder or sore ness problems. We’ve had some good weather and it’s allowed us to keep working,’ Chandler said. The Aggies are slated to start with the same eight that took the field against St. Marys. As a team the Aggies stroked 21 hits and .328 batting average in the twinbill. Butch Ghutzman, who cracked four hits in seven times at the plate, will lead off and play third COURT’S SADDLERY . . .
