Senate begins
(Continued from page 1)
to the student body for majority
approval.
During discussion last week and
last night, senators pointed out
the amendment would allow as
few as 26 senators to approve
an amendment (about one-fourth
of the membership).
Recording Secretary Bill Harts-
field, in defending the amend
ment, said attendance by senators
is so poor that usually barely
over the required three-fourth is
t present in the first place. Thus,
he said, a small number, six or
seven, could prevent an amend
ment from being passed.
Parliamentarian Michael Ess-
myer presented a recommendation
by the Senate’s sweetheart com
mittee, that “The Aggie Sweet
heart will be selected from A&M
coeds only.”
After the recommendation was
presented some committee mem
bers, including Senate Treasurer
Eddie Duryea, said that the idea
had seemed good at the time but
did not now. Duryea said he
thought it would be best if the
recommendation were referred
back to the committee for further
consideration.

Aggie Sweetheart Sue Binford
was present, having made a spe
cial trip from Texas Woman’s
University in Denton to attend.
She said TWU President Dr. John
A. Guinn had told her TWU
would pay bills for finalists from
that school, if it would help the
situation.
Miss Binford said she under
stood the financial problem was
one of the big concerns with the
Senate, and that she hoped
Guinn’s offer would help. She
said the Aggie Sweetheart tradi
tion means a great deal to TWU,
and that they would not like to
see it fizzle out for financial
reasons.
Senators then voted to refer
the matter back to committee.
The Sweetheart Committee will
meet Monday at 8 p. m. in room
107 of the YMCA. Essmyer said
the meeting is open to anyone
interested in attending.
Two sophomore senators were
appointed during the meeting, one
from the College of Engineering
and one from the College of Edu
cation.
The Senate approved the ap
pointment of Dan Zivney, chem
ical engineering, and John Moore,
physical education,, upon Caper-
ton’s recommendation.
Zivney was approved and seat
ed without much opposition,
Moore was another story. Some
senators objected to letting a new
senator sit and vote at his first
meeting, before he has been able
to acquaint himself with the is
sues.
Other senators pointed out Ziv
ney already had been seated, and
that freshmen senators are al
lowed to vote their first meeting,
as are graduate student senators.
The original motion to accept and
seat Moore failed, hut a later
motion allowed him to be seated
and Vote at the meeting.

agency, located in Washington.
Counts explained that an ap
pointment as arbitrator must be
recommended by a number of
managerial and labor personnel
involved in direct selection of
impartial individuals to handle
grievances in the labor relations
areas.
