College Station, Texas Wednesday, December 9, 1970 THE BATTALION Page 6 Elmendorf, Hoot tie for theft lead Dave Elmendorf By JOHN CURYLO Assistant Sports Editor In final season statistics an nounced by the Southwest Con ference, A&M’s Dave Elmendorf placed in three of the individual categories, tying for the lead in one. Elmendorf, fellow Aggie David Hoot, and Arkansas' David Hogue tied in interceptions with six each. Elmendorf led in inter ception return yardage with 87. Hoot returned his steals for 40 yards, while Hogue had 45 yards and one touchdown. Jimmy Sheffield, the senior punter, was second in that de partment. He kicked 66 times for 2650 yards and an average of 40.2. Ed Marsh of Baylor was the leader, with 3556 yards on 88 kicks for a 40.4 average, bare ly nosing out Sheffield. Quarterback Lex James fin ished second in passing and third in total offense. Playing in ten games, James completed 111 passes for 1662 yards and six touchdowns. He finished with 15.0 yards per completion and an average completion of 11.1. The leader was Chuck Hixson of SMU. The longest play in the SWC this year was the James-to- Hugh McElroy bomb that went for 79 yards to win the LSU game 20-18. In total offense, Jkmes’ nega tive rushing yardage brought his output down to 1473, placing him third behind Hixson and Arkan sas' Bill Montgomery. His game average was 147.3, while Hixson had 187.4 and Montgomery 166.5. In kickoff returns, Elmendorf finished fourth with a 19.9 yard return average. He returned 23 for 457 yards. He also was sixth in punt returns, running back 13 kicks for 130 yards, a 10.0 aver age. Homer May, the sophomore tight end, was seventh in receiv ing, averaging 2.4 completions. In 11 games, he caught 26 aer ials for 479 yards and five touch downs. He was first among the leaders with yardage per comple tion, compiling a fine 18.4 norm. His touchdown figure was also best among the receiving leaders. All these Aggies, with the ex ception of May, are from Hous ton.
