It made me mad because he insinu ated that it was an ultra right- wing militarist’s hangout. It’s not that at all. People just do the right thing there. They be have themselves and try to live a good life. I’m proud of that.” Former Texas A&M football star Charlie Krueger, now a dlefensive tackle for the San Francisco 49’ers of the National Football League made this statement and many more praising his alma mater in a column in the Nov. 14 issue of The Sporting News. The column by former Hous ton Chronicle sports writer Wells Twombly featured an interview with Krueger, who has gone from the world of Aggie football to become not only a pro football player but a devout opera fan as well as a mountain lion hunter. Try Something Different Try dm? fyiph'A Friday & Saturday With Odessey of Dallas $1.00 per person Perhaps the most undersung young player on Texas A&M‘s football team is David Hoot, strong safety or rover, from Houston Reagan. Last Saturday in the Cotton Bowl against SMU he intercept ed three passes and thereby passed his secondary mate, Dave Elmendorf, in that category for the year. David Hoot Hoot returned the first for 26 yards and, ironically, Elmendorf injured an ankle throwing a block on that return. On the other two Hoot did not have any return yardage. Hoot has always been a pass thief. He led the Fish with three interceptions in five games as they posted a 5-0 mark. Last year he swiped two and now this year he has pilfered six. Although he has stuck to foot ball since coming to Texas A&M, he is an all-around athlete like Elmendorf. During his high school career he was all-city and all-zone in football, baseball and basketball. In baseball he hit .606 in American Legion play and average .395 for three years. He scored 600 points in basket ball his senior year and once scored five touchdowns in a foot ball game. Baseball talent runs in the family. David’s half-brother Don Young once was a starting cen- terfielder for the Chicago Cubs. Hoot has not played any of fense for the Aggies but he has been a stalwart in the Aggie de fensive secondary. At 6-2 and 194 he has good size and he has the quickness for the strong safe ty spot. Hoot now leads the SWC in in terceptions. His three against SMU is his all-time high for a game although he had two against Michigan earlier. In regard to the foes the Ag gies have faced this year, Hoot says Rex Kern of Ohio State is the best quarterback. The Buck eyes also get his vote for offen sive line and offensive backfield. LSU had the top defensive front and Michigan the best defensive secondary. Since all the votes went to those three intersectional foes, it is interesting to note that Ohio State and Michigan still are un beaten and LSU’s only loss was that 20-18 decision to the Aggies. Hoot has more experience than most in that he came to A&M at mid-term, and had two spring practices prior to playing varsity football. He’ll be ready for his old home town foe, the Rice Owls, who in vade Kyle Field Saturday after noon. Maybe he’ll swipe a few more passes.
