So, it’s no surprise that the 6-foot, 211- pounder is a starting defensive end for the Aggies as a sopho more this year. It may be a surprise to some folks, though. As a 190-pound defensive tackle at Tascosa High in Amarillo, Bird wasn’t a highly sought prospect. But A&M fresh man coach Jim Keller, who re cruited in the Panhandle then, liked Bird’s style of play and signed him. Last Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich., Bird had four unassisted help for|| Texas Tech scouting report . . . Tech has top running game BY VICTOR MOORE Battalion Sports Writer The improving Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-1) will come to Col lege Station Saturday night to go against the Aggies (2-2), in what has been a traditionally close tough football game. Although the Red Raiders re turn 31 lettermen, they have not escaped graduation pains. Tech, though losing only five defensive starters, lost a lot of talent in All-American Halfback Denton Fox, and All-Southwest Confer ence defensive end Richard Campbell. The defense does have good experience in its six return ing starters, and with the help of some good sophomores should produce one of the best defenses in the conference. The offense returns nine of its starters from last season. Charles Napper, who will be the starting quarterback this fall, led Tech in passing last year (65 of 153) for 901 yards and five touch downs. Converted flanker, John ny Odom, will be holding down the tight end spot this season. Last year as a flanker, Odom led the team with 320 yards on 23 receptions. With a fine spring workout, Odom has been given a good chance to become All- SWC. Tech’s running game is a good one. Although there is not a su per back, there are six good run ners to provide depth and punch to the offense. 6’-2”, 206 pound Danny Hardaway, who gained 483 yards on 159 carries last sea son, will be joined in the back- field by 5’-ll”, 196 pound Miles Langehenning, who carried the ball 86 times for 336 yards, and 5’-ll”, 202 pound sophomore Doug McCutchen. Others to watch for are Larry Hargrave, Don Crocker, and Johnny Klein- ert. In Tech’s four previous games this year McCutchen and Lange henning have been the backbone of the Red Raider running game. Both have displayed good speed to go wide and to hit the line quick and powerfully. Together, they have rushed for 511 yards of the 1009 total rushing yards, in only 100 carries. Combine this with the throwing arm of Napper 29 of 54 for 368 yards, the Raid ers have been able to win three of their first four games, bowing only to Texas 35-13 two weeks ago. Scoring for Tech has been as few as 13 to a h i g h of 63 points, generated by a well drilled offense that likes to take advantage of an opponent’s mis takes. The Red Raider defense has been a good one in the early go ing. It has given up only a total of 750 yards in its three wins. Texas, however, changed that good defensive average of 250 yards per game by rolling up 522 yards of its own (432 yards on the ground and 90 yards in the air) against the Raiders in Lubbock. In the last four games, the Red Raiders defense, led by Bruce Bushong at free safety, has picked off seven passes and re covered ten fumbles. Expect a good hard fought game Saturday night, matching Lex James’ throwing arm against a stingy defensive secondary, and the running of McCutchen and Langehenning against a strong Aggie defense. Texas Tech can not afford another loss this early in the Southwest Conference. Max Bird tackles, had one tackle for a three-yard loss and recovered one Michigan fumble. “He’s an emotional player,” Stallings says of Bird. “He gets after you on every play. I’m not comparing him with Mike DeNiro (A&M’s star defensive end who died in an auto mishap last Janu ary), but Bird plays with the same zest DeNiro did. I like that.” Bird was an alternate starter at defensive end for the freshman team and had a great game against Texas Tech, dumping the quarterback for losses five times. This Saturday he’ll be starting his first varsity game against the Red Raiders and Bird will be satisfied if he can another victory. Though just a sophomore, Bi has already come a long He has started every game that includes foes such as LSI Ohio State and Michigan, is enough experience to last players a lifetime. Bird had a fine debut for Aggies, recovering two fmjlL in A&M’s 41-14 win over Wkki State. He also played a big r. in the 20-18 upset win overli; Bird isn’t big for a defew end, but his exceptional quit ness compensates for a lack size. Stallings feels Bird nee to improve on containing end sweeps, but more playi time should take care of that Bird is one of the betters dents on the Aggie squad, can] ing a B average into his soph more year. He’d like to can medical school when his playi days are over. Right now, though, he’s faci an internship of at least tmi a half more years in a Man jersey, and he’ll be happy toi tor up a few opponents. 1970 TOYOTA $1830.00 BRAZOS VALLEY TOYOTA INC.
