Main 822-0161 losing streak Friday night at 8 when they host Del Valle at Tiger Field. The Tigers have lost to Dallas Carter 46-6 and Sweeny 35-19 in their first two games, and the main problem is defense as they have already allowed more points than the Tigers’ 1968 team did. Consolidated rolled off 354 yards in the Sweeny game but a blocked punt, interceptions and fumbles gave them excellent field position in the contest. Coach Jack Churchill had spe cial praise for two of his linemen. “It’s inspiring to see a 155- pound guard trap block a 210- pound tackle and George did that several times,” Churchill said of Gorge Fanguy who plays both offensive and defensive guard. “Tackle Bob Price showed lots of improvement in our last game. In fact, our overall line play showed real improvement.” he’ll do the job,” Chtrchill said. The football weekend at Con solidated starts tonight when the seventh and eighth grade teams visit Caldwell and the Junior Varsity hosts Marlin. The Consolidated Junior Var sity is slated to play Marlin at 7:30 p.m. on Tiger Field while the freshman team will have an open date this week. The seventh and eighth grade teams will play at Caldwell with the seventh grade game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the eighth grade game immediately following it. Roger to start DALLAS — Dallas coach Tom Landry said Wednesday Roger Staubach would start at quarterback against the New York Giants Sunday in their National Football League game in the Cotton Bowl. Mark Logan will start at quar terback for the Buckeyes replac ing Jim Fenner, who broke his hand during the Sweeny game. “Fenner has been a mainstay on our club and we’ll really miss “I think Roger did a good job against Philadelphia,” Landry said of the Cowboys’ opening 17-7 victory. “Roger’s potential is gerat. With a little more experi ence, he will play even better.” By JOHN CURYLO Battalion Sports Writer Two years ago, the Ohio State Buckeyes won the national cham pionship with a team made up mostly of sophomores. Saturday night the Aggies face 27 of these players, 18 of them two-year lettermen, as they open their senior season. Ohio State was 8-1 last year, losing to Michigan 24-12 in the final game of the season to tie for the Big Ten title. This year, Coach W. W. “Woody” Hayes has back 30 lettermen from that team, seven regulars each on offense and defense. Of these 30 letter- men, 17 play on offense and 13 on defense. Offensively, the Buckeyes will start seven seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore. At split end is Bruce Jankowski, a 5-11, 192- pound senior who has caught 54 passes for 732 yards and eight touchdowns in his two years at Ohio State. He has been the lead ing pass receiver both years. The tight end is senior Jan White, 6-2, 212. He has started all 19 varsity games in his two years, catching a total of 44 passes. He is a co-captain on of fense this year. From tackle to tackle, the line averages 221 pounds. Starting at the tackles Saturday will be junior Dave Cheney and John Hicks, a 240-pound sophomore who stands 6-3. Guards are Dick Kuhn, a converted end, and Phil Strick land, both seniors. The center is 6-2, 214-pound junior Tom De- Leone, who played in every game last year. Rex Kern returns for his third year as the Ohio State quarter back. He is considered to be a strong candidate for the Heisman Trophy. After just two seasons, he holds the Buckeye record for total offense with 3,091 yards. Last year, he scored nine touch downs and passed for nine. Kern’s specialty is converting broken plays into long gains. The halfbacks are Leo Hayden and Larry Zelina, both seniors. Hayden carried 63 times last year to average 5.4 yards per carry. Zelina who also punts, led the Big Ten in punt returns last year, including a 76 yard touchdown return against Michigan State. He carried 45 times as a sophomore and 72 times last year. Brockington, 6-1, 216, scored six touchdowns by rushing last year. Defensively, the Buckeyes use a 5-4 “Oklahoma” defense, some times switching to a 4-3. 4 sen iors, 4 juniors, and 3 sophomores will start. The line averages 223 pounds. The ends are senior Mark Debevc, a two-year starter at Ohio State, who scored a touch down against Michigan State last year on a pass interception, and Kenneth Luttner, a junior who was moved to end a year ago. Both tackles are sophomores. George Hasenohrl, 6-1, 240, was the top defensive lineman on last year’s freshman team. Shad Wil liams, 6-3, 232, played four posi tions last year, but once he was played regularly at tackle, he ex celled. Jim Stillwagon is a 6-0, 220- pound senior who was named All-American last year at middle guard. He becomes a linebacker when the Buckeyes use a four- man line. Probably the best middle guard ever at Ohio State, Still- wagon has excellent lateral move ment and is one of the hardest hitters on the team. Senior Doug Adams and junior Stan White will open at linebacker for Ohio State. Adams has started two years and calls the defensive signals. White was used as a place kicker and reserve lineback er last year. He played freshman basketball at Ohio State and was a catcher on the varsity baseball team last spring. At 6-0, 208, rover Jack Tatum, a unanimous all-American selec tion last season, has started all 19 games for Ohio State in his two years. He is a vicious tackier and a fine professional prospect. Starting at halfback will be John Hughes and Tim Anderson. Hughes is a 6-1, 190-pound soph omore who played flanker on the freshman team and was an out standing halfback and quarter back in high school. Anderson has started at the rugged five-yard halfback position for two years. He is a dedicated football player with speed, strength, and spirit. One of the top safety men in college football, Mike Sensibaugh, another two-year starter, will not see action against the Aggies due to an injury. The starting safety will be Harry Howard, a junior who played behind Ted Provost last year. The only apparent problem is complacency, with so many sen iors who are used to winning. Pro scouts estimate that as many as 13 Buckeyes will go in the first three draft rounds this year. In 19 years at Ohio State, Coach Hayes has a record of 125-42-7. His teams have won five undis puted Big Ten championships and one co-championship, three Rose Bowl games in as many appear ances, and they won 17 consecu tive Big Ten games on two occa sions. During his career at Ohio State, the Buckeyes have been national champions three times and have led the nation in at tendance per home game 18 years. Three Ags head SWC statistics DALLAS (A*) — The current Southwest Conference football statistics show the defense still has a long way to go to catch up with the offense. Young Lex James, the Texas A&M quarterback who burned Louisiana State, and gained 314 yards passing took over the Southwest Conference total of fense lead wtih a per-game aver age of 211.5 yards. He also moved into second place in passing with 27 completions to 44 by Chuck Hixson of Southern Methodist. Hugh McElroy, the 5-foot-7 A&M split end who caught the 79-yard pass with 13 seconds to play that defeated Louisiana State, leads in tandem offense- rushing and receiving. He has handled the ball 10 times and gained a whopping 272 yards. On the rushing front, Texas Christian’s Bobby Davis, held to 18 yards against Purdue, hiked his two-game total to 265 yards to head off Eddie Phillips of Texas and Mike Spruill of Rice. Raymond Mapps of SMU has caught 11 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown—an average of 13.5 yards per catch and 5.5 completions per game. A&M’s field goal specialist Pat McDermott leads in scoring with 19 points. Texas leads in total offense with 556 yards. The Longhorns piled up 443 yards rushing against California in a 56-15 rout to also lead that department. The Aggies lead in passing offense with an average of 271 yards per game. Rice leads in total defense al lowing 96 yards per game, in rushing defense with 82 yards and passing defense with only 14 yards allowed in the 42-0 smashing of VMI.
