Tigers tough as usual By JOHN CURYLO A&M’s opponent Saturday night is 12th-ranked LSU, who has fielded 62 winning teams in its 77-year football history. Last year, the Fighting Tigers opened against the Aggies with a score of 35-6, and then they went on to finish 9-1, the only setback being against Mississippi. The Bayou Bengals have lost 18 lettermen from last year, includ ing fullback-punter Eddie Ray. However, 32 lettermen return, and LSU is expected to be a con tender for the Southeastern Con ference title. The offensive hopes of LSU are based on tailback Tommy Casa nova, who was all-SEC as a soph omore cornerback last year. Casa nova used his 9.7 speed last year to carry 24 times for 108 yards in limited offensive action. He also returned five kickoffs for 126-yards and 23 punts for 263 yards, j Taking Ray’s fullback slot will be converted tailback Allen Shorey, who gained 485 yards on 118 carries for four touchdowns last year. At splitback will be Andy Hamilton, last season’s No. 2 man at that position. Hamilton, a 6-3, 195-pound junior, caught 16 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns last year. As a ball carrier, he scored four times, having gained 68 yards in 13 attempts. The Tigers have two quarter backs competing for Mike Hill man’s vacated post. Senior Buddy Lee is a polished passer and played behind Hillman last year. Sophomore Bert Jones, 6-3 and 207, supposedly has the best LSU passing arm since Y. A. Tittle. Ken Kavanaugh is the split end this year. He is the son of the LSU Hall of Famer and present assistant'coach for the New York f Giants. At tight end, lettermen Randy Toms and Jay Michaelson will share playing time with soph omore Jesse Truax, the younger brother of former Tiger great Billy Truax, who now plays for the Los Angeles Rams. Depth is a problem in the of fensive line, but there are seven returning lettermen. The only sophomore starter is left tackle Tom Besselman. On defense, LSU sets up in a 4-3 basic alignment. A successful year depends on a steady per formance by the front four, re placement of last year’s big three at linebacker, and the secondary playing up to its capability. The line consists of sophomore Mike Doyle and senior Arthur Davis at the ends, and senior John Sage and junior Ronnie Estay at the tackles. Depth and experience are no problems in this department for the Tigers. .. NEW YORK (JP) — Texas Southern California and Notre Dame, three of the leading can didates for No. 1 football honors, get their cleats muddied this week — but not their records. They should win, but Nebras ka 25: The Trojans have size, the Trojans. Also watch feath ers fly in the Houston-Syracuse game. Southern California 32, Nebras ka 25: The Trojans have sige, a winning habit and a quarter back named Jimmy Jones, but the Cornhuskers have a scoring punch. Notre Dame 38, Northwestern 14: Ara Parseghian can’t afford to show too much mercy to his former associates. Texas 25, California 14: The Longhorns are reported as big, tough and fast as last year’s champions, so they can’t be worser—not with Steve Worster. Oklahoma 19, Wisconsin 15: Two teams on the rebound, but the Sooners must prove them- serves in a hurry. Houston 23, Syracuse 19: Moon Mullins spearheads the Houston offense which the Or angemen can slow down but not stop. Penn State 27, Navy 8: The Nittany Lions extend their un beaten streak to 31, but the mid shipmen are on the way up. UCLA 20, Pittsburgh 14: Den nis Dummit and his Pacific Coast mates will find Pitt big and strong — but still developing. Baylor 18, Army 15: The Bears, with Si Southall, should eke this one out in an upset. Army looked ragged in its opener. North Carolina 14, North Car olina State 9: These Dixie rivals give up little ground — the Tar heels get even for 1969. Michigan State 22, Washing ton 18: This is not one of Dutty’s better teams but it’s too good for hard-hit Huskies. Louisiana State 17, Texas A&M 10: Ken Kavanaugh, Jr., revives old memories for LSU fans. PALACE RrH;m 2-SS79 TODAY — 1:30-3:30-5:30-7:30-9:30 Sidney Poitier In “THEY CALL ME, MR.
