A compacted surface, two inches of asphalt, three inches of foam rubber and one layer of AstroTurf, but do you think it’ll keep the nut grass from coming through?” “Z" It means “He is still alive.” The letter lay freshly painted on the pavement when the police arrived to break up the gathering. The slain deputy’s wife looked down on the scene from a hotel room several stories up and watched as the police beat upon the crowd with their billy sticks and arrested student after stu dent. Soon they were all gone, those people who had come below and painted that single letter of faith in the concrete driveway. But he was dead now, the deputy, her husband and the father of their children, and what had just occurred below would not bring him back to her. It could only offer a hope that the deputy and his cause would not be for gotten. “Z” is about the efforts of a small, minority political party with a pitch for peace to gain the support of the populace and win the upcoming elections. With in the party the major control lies with those who want to reach their goals by peaceful means. There are a few members who would like to employ the same brutal tactics as the opposition to achieve their objectives. The present government is try ing to maintain the status quo and silence the dissenting faction threatening to gain control of the masses like it has already influ enced the students and intellec tuals of the country. In their attempts to harrass the peace party into giving up their cause, two henchmen from the national police manage to kill a key figure within the party and Bulletin Board TONIGHT A&M Sailing Team will meet at 7 p.m. in room 206 of the Civil Engineering Building. During the ensuing investiga tion, the facts are hidden by the national police administrators, the issue is blamed on two drunks and dismissed as an accident. A concentrated effort is made by the government to bring the case to a fast close so as not to let the truth spring out and em barrass them on the scene of in ternational politics. Shortly after the case is closed, a bright young attorney from the Inspector General’s office emerges with enough evidence to convict the heads of the national police of trying to avert justice and inten tional homicide. Despite the warnings of his superiors to drop the case and save his career with the govern ment, the young attorney decides he must follow the route of his conscience and serve the hall of justice. Score here a point for the movie in making a comment on the system versus the indi vidual. The heads for the national police are convicted and let off the hook with mere warnings. Another play by the movie to show how the system manages to protect itself. During the scandal that follows, the government manages to lose the elections to the peace party. Shortly thereafter, the new gov ernment is overthrown by the military and its leaders sentenced into oblivion, where they are never heard from again. Win some and lose some, so they say. Social comment number three on systems. “Z” is a beautiful example of how a system is able to protect itself, right or wrong. It also shows how the will of the major ity can triumph through the demo cratic process, and then how this can all come tumbling down when someone (the military) throws a rock into the gears. Perhaps if the new government had used the same means of sup pression to protect itself as did the old system, it may have lasted far longer. But then, it wouldn’t have been the type of govern ment that it professed to be. Maybe to exist among hypo crites one must also be a hypo crite by saying one thing and doing another. That’s what everyone else in the movie was doing. The philosophy behind the movie “Z” is one that has ever been present since man first be gan to govern himself. It is not an outstanding showing. The filming is not what it should be. It doesn’t even have good actors. But “Z” has a message about government and society that it conveys in a very direct and pro found way.
