Aggies prepare for ’Shockers
Wednesday was a day of no
contact in the Texas Aggie foot
ball camp as preparations con
tinued for A&M’s Sept. 12 open
er here with Wichita State.
In separate drills, the Aggie
offense took a long, hard look at
Wichita State defensive align
ments and the defense closely
studied the Wheat Shockers’ of
fensive plays.
The Aggies’ defensive second
ary had one unit of Ed Ebrom
and Robert Murski at the cor-

ners and Dave Elmendorf and
David Hoot at the safeties and
another of Chris Johnson and
Bland Smith at the corners and
Mike Bunger and Lee Hitt at
safeties.
Offensively, Lex James con
tinues to run the Aggie attack
from the quarterback slot. Marc
Black and Doug Neill were alter
nating at fullback while Brad
Dusek, Steve Burks and Rocky
Self were running at the half
back slots.
The Aggies injured list cur
rently shows only one serious
injury as right halfback Clifford
Thomas was lost for the year
with a shoulder separation in the
opening practice of two-a-day
workouts.
Several players are currently
sidelined with less serious inju
ries, however. They are Mike Bel-
lar, with a sore leg Tommy Dea
ton with a knee injury; Dennis
Phillips leads
AUSTIN, Tex. DP) — Quarter
back Eddie Phillips directed the
University of Texas No. 1 of
fense to five touchdowns in sev
en possessions against the No. 2
defense in a controlled scrim
mage Wednesday.
Phillips hit six of 14 passes
for 51 yards and was the leading
rusher with 66 yards in eight
carries.
Gary Keithley and Donny Wig-
ginton alternated at quarter-
backing the No. 2 offense against
the No. 1 defense without much
success. They failed to score
against the first string defense
in nine possessions.
Head coach Darrell Royal call
ed it a “so-so” workout.

Wichita State, the Aggies first

passing of quarterback Bob Ren

Gene Robinson.
Renner connected on 5 of 6
passes for 115 yards during scrim

Steve Vestal, a 5-11, 200 pound
linebacker, was moved to the
first team at strong side line
backer by Arkansas Razorback
coaches Wednesday.
Vestal scored high grades on
films from scrimmage Saturday
and Tuesday. He replaces John
nie Jones in the starting lineup.
Vestal had been at middle
linebacker on the second team
behind Guy Parker. Vestal saw
limited action last fall.
The Razorbacks worked out

bed two passes for gains of 40
and 39 yards and his receptions
totaled 93 yards for the scrim
mage.
All-MVC fullback Randy Jack-
son was also impressive running
off 114 yards on 12 carries.
Aggie golfers
begin qualifying
Forty-two players were sched
uled to tee off Wednesday weath
er permitting in the opening qual
ifying rounds for the Texas Ag
gie golf team.
The golfers will shoot 10
rounds, with 18 holes slated for
yesterday and next Wednesday
and 36 holes each on the next
two Saturdays and Sundays.
Coach Henry Ransom said that
after the qualifying play the
squad will be cut to 14 or 16
members, although six will be
the most that will make any of
the trips.
The Aggies lost two veterans
off last years team in Richard
Ellis and Duke Butler. A&M plac
ed second in the Southwest Con
ference standings last season.
Ellis recently won his first
professional tournament on his
first try when he captured the
$1250 top prize in the Louisiana

port.

The Texas A&M tennis team
opened work this week in prep
aration for the 1971 tennis sea
son slated to get underway in
February.
Despite the fact the regular
season is so far off, tennis fans
may get a preview of the Aggies
in an exhibition match against
LSU in Baton Rouge on the aft
ernoon of the day the Aggie
football team plays the LSU Ti
gers (Sept. 19).
Coach Omar Smith said the
possibility of the exhibition is
very likely, with only a few mi
nor details to be worked out.
The exhibition will help LSU
inaugurate its new tennis stadi
um, Smith said. The stadium has
a Tartan turf surface that is
similar to the turf that was in
stalled this summer on the track
around Kyle Field.
Smith said the stadium’s Tar
tan, however, will be more gran
ulated than that of the Kyle Field
track to allow for the bounce of
the ball.
Eight members of the tennis
squad return from last year and
the Aggies have a great supply
of depth. Aside from eight vet
erans they also have Jon Rag
land, who, was redshirted last
year due to an injury.
Ragland teamed with Pete
Faust to win the Southwest Con
ference doubles championship in
1968.
Returning squadman are sen
iors Mike Hickey and Paul Loth-
rop; Juniors Dickie Fikes, Tom
my Connell and David Chastain;
sophomores Carl Jaedicke, Law-
ton Park and Mike Mills.
Three freshmen have also been
impressive in workouts according
to Smith and he added that 10
other freshman are working on
the B-Team and will get an op
portunity to work their way to
the varsity.
Frogs promote two
FORT WORTH, Tex. <A>)_Tex-
as Christian head football coach
Fred Taylor promoted a pair of
second teamers to the No. 1 de
fensive unit Wednesday.
They were Ken Hanson, who
replaced Larry Dibbles as the
Froggies’ No. 1 left defensive
tackle and safety Richard Wise
man, who moved ahead of senior
veteran Greg Webb.
Following Wednesday’s two-
hour drill, Taylor said he was
most pleased with the improve
ment in the Frogs’ punting,
which was a disappointment in
the last scrimmage.
Taylor complimented the punt
ing of Don Carter and Royce
Huffman.
Dan Coursen, Bill Pecor and
Jeff Carter, all freshmen, have
been impressive enough in open
ing practices to be placed on the
varsity.
Other freshmen, who are cur
rently listed on the B-team roster
are Kermit Smith, Glen Beck,
Ben Garcia, Mark Daly, Dennis
Dickie Fikes
Hirschfield, Mitch Barker, Mark
Lothrop, Mike Collins, Carl Wolf-
sholhl and Alan Braesche.
Smith said that the B-team
players will have a tournament
next week to figure out the seed-
ings for the players. After that is
completed, they will play each
other to try to advance up what
is called the challenge ladder.
It is possible, for a player to
get a shot at the varsity after
working his way to the top of
the B-team ladder, Smith said.
A challenge ladder for varsity
members has already been set.
Smith was impressed with the
depth his team has and showed
much promise for the coming
season.
