Despite the fact the regular season is so far off, tennis fans may get a preview of the Aggies in an exhibition match against LSU in Baton Rouge on the aft ernoon of the day the Aggie football team plays the LSU Ti gers (Sept. 19). Coach Omar Smith said the possibility of the exhibition is very likely, with only a few mi nor details to be worked out. The exhibition will help LSU inaugurate its new tennis stadi um, Smith said. The stadium has a Tartan turf surface that is similar to the turf that was in stalled this summer on the track around Kyle Field. Smith said the stadium’s Tar tan, however, will be more gran ulated than that of the Kyle Field track to allow for the bounce of the ball. Eight members of the tennis squad return from last year and the Aggies have a great supply of depth. Aside from eight vet erans they also have Jon Rag land, who, was redshirted last year due to an injury. Ragland teamed with Pete Faust to win the Southwest Con ference doubles championship in 1968. Returning squadman are sen iors Mike Hickey and Paul Loth- rop; Juniors Dickie Fikes, Tom my Connell and David Chastain; sophomores Carl Jaedicke, Law- ton Park and Mike Mills. Three freshmen have also been impressive in workouts according to Smith and he added that 10 other freshman are working on the B-Team and will get an op portunity to work their way to the varsity. Frogs promote two FORT WORTH, Tex. )_Tex- as Christian head football coach Fred Taylor promoted a pair of second teamers to the No. 1 de fensive unit Wednesday. They were Ken Hanson, who replaced Larry Dibbles as the Froggies’ No. 1 left defensive tackle and safety Richard Wise man, who moved ahead of senior veteran Greg Webb. Following Wednesday’s two- hour drill, Taylor said he was most pleased with the improve ment in the Frogs’ punting, which was a disappointment in the last scrimmage. Taylor complimented the punt ing of Don Carter and Royce Huffman. Dan Coursen, Bill Pecor and Jeff Carter, all freshmen, have been impressive enough in open ing practices to be placed on the varsity. Other freshmen, who are cur rently listed on the B-team roster are Kermit Smith, Glen Beck, Ben Garcia, Mark Daly, Dennis Dickie Fikes Hirschfield, Mitch Barker, Mark Lothrop, Mike Collins, Carl Wolf- sholhl and Alan Braesche. Smith said that the B-team players will have a tournament next week to figure out the seed- ings for the players. After that is completed, they will play each other to try to advance up what is called the challenge ladder. It is possible, for a player to get a shot at the varsity after working his way to the top of the B-team ladder, Smith said. A challenge ladder for varsity members has already been set. Smith was impressed with the depth his team has and showed much promise for the coming season. perma-crease Westbury Slacks j>un fitiuncr* umbersritp men’s toear 3i29 University Drive 713/846-2706 Colletre Station, Texaa 77840 BROWN - ALLEN MOTOR CO.
