The university has awarded approximately 66,000 degrees in its 94 years of existence. And in the future, he may sign some that come from scholarships awarded as a memorial to Heaton and his deceased wife. Because of Heaton’s long-time service and dedication to the uni versity, the Association of Former Students has announced the for mation of the H. Lloyd and Bessie Heaton Memorial Scholarship Fund. Former Students Director Rich ard (Buck) Weirus noted the fund currently has enough in come to permanently support at least eight $100 tuition scholar ships. They will be awarded for the fall semester, Weirus said. Mrs. Heaton died in May after a long career as a public school educator dedicated to the educa tion of young people. “Contributions are now being received by the association to add to this fund in hopes 12 or 13 scholarships will be available,” Weirus pointed out. Heaton has signed diplomas under the signature of eight Texas A&M presidents. “I sign the diplomas with a great deal of pleasure and expect success of every man whose diplo ma wears the name of the presi dent and mine,” he confided. Included among those receiving degrees with Heaton’s signature are 40 relatives and one son. Dr. Charles Heaton. Dr. Heaton, a professor on the medical staff at the University of Pennsylvania College of Medi cine and Philadelphia General Hospital, received his degree from A&M in 1957. He worked to ward his M.D. at B aylor College of Medicine. Heaton came to Texas A&M in 1933 as a graduate student. He earned a B.S. degree in 1929 from Stephen F. Austin and taught five years in public schools prior to entering A&M. In 1934 he was named assistant registrar and in 1941 was ap pointed registrar. Heaton received a master’s from A&M in 1934. His title was changed to direc tor of admissions and registrar in admissions and records in 1969. The 64-year-old Panola County native predicted it would take two more years to reach the 50,000 degree signature mark. H. L.
