Dr. R. D. Turpin, professor of civil engineering, will participate on a council of technical divi sions committee, as will Dr. R. E. Stewart, professor of agri cultural engineering. Stewart is also scheduled for a presentation during a regular session. Also giving talks are Dr. John B. Herbich, professor of civil en gineering, and Dr. Robert C. Hansen, assistant professor of agricultural engineering. Other members of the Texas A&M engineering faculty who will attend various sessions at Columbus, Ohio, are Professor A. E. Cronk, head of aerospace engineering; Dr. L. A. Carlson, assistant professor of aerospace engineering; Dr. J. D. Lindsay, professor emeritus of chemical engineering; Dr. A. H. Whiting, head of pe troleum engineering. A $16,000 National Aeronautics and Space Administration re search grant has been awarded to the Meteorology Department. The research project, entitled “Computer Modeling for Transfer of Microwave Radiation Through Hydrometers,’ is directed by Dr. Robert A. Clark, associate pro fessor of meteorology. Dr. Clark explained the re search involves measurement of weak microwave radiation from ocean areas through the use of a radiometer. The 17th annual Texas State Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Ap prentice Contest will be held on campus through Friday. Fifty-four of the top third, fourth and fifth year appren tice trainees from Texas locals will compete in their divisions for cash and scholarship prizes. Fifth year students also com pete for a chance to represent the state at the North America conference later this summer at Purdue. Contestants were selected through competition held at training centers in their home towns, reports Don Garner, Tex as Engineering Extension Serv ice staff member and coordina tor of the State Apprentice Training Program. The contest is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. An awards banquet is set Friday evening at the Ra- mada Inn. State Sen. Chet Brooks of Houston will give the keynote address. Eight different projects are scored during the contest, Gar ner noted. Separate contests are held for plumbers and pipe j r ters and there is separate I petition for third, fourth iJ fifth year students. Sponsors are the Texas Sty Apprenticeship Committee, ity membership from the Tan I State Pipe Trades, Mechaity I Contractors Association of Tj as. Association of 1 Heating and Cooling Contu tors, Gulf Coast Piping Contra | tors and Construction Emploj Association. Measurements include moisture content of clouds and the atmos phere from regions not normally covered by other meteorological instruments, he said. Dr. Clark said much of the research is being conducted by Jack Paris, Ph.D. candidate. Also involved in the program is Dr. George L. Huebner Jr., associate professor of meteorol ogy. who is working on a better radiometer design. Dr. Clark pointed out measure ments of sea surface tempera tures, salinity of the water and moisture content is possible through the use of the radiometer techniques.
