Intermittent rain become the nemisis of the 1970 SWC Track bonanza as the preliminaries and some of the finals, scheduled for Friday at Rice Stadium, were postponed until Saturday and moved to San Jacinto Junior Col lege in Pasadena. But rain or shine, things fin ally got underway Saturday afternoon on the San Jacinto Turf and as expected, the Aggies used their blazing speed to cop their first SWC title in 17 years. They total 72% points to out distance easily Texas with 57% and Rice with 57. Coach Charlie Thomas’ Maroon flashes were the only ones who wanted to run the preliminaries on Friday, in spite of the drizzle, for obvious reasons. “Our main point boys all had to double or triple, and it’s quite a tapk for these boys to run the prelims and the finals the same day,” Thomas said. Curtis Mills, the big point-get ter for the day, turned in one of his best overall performances in many meets as he won his spe cialty, the 440 yard dash, and the 220 dash and ran a leg on the winning sprint relay unit. But close behind him was A&M’s do-it-all sprinter Rockie Woods who garnered a first in the 100 yard dash, a third in the 220, anchored the sprint re lay team and even ran fourth in the high hurdles. Marvin Mills, Curtis’ brother, also ran on the sprint relay, finished second in the 220 and second in the 100. The sprint relay unit streaked to a 39.8 clocking to lower the conference mark of 40 flat held by Texas. Mills turned on a be lated charge to edge Texas’ Dave Morton in the 440 with a 46 flat. Next came the 100 and A&M scored a first, second and third sweep and Thomas even thought that Rogers should have been given fifth. The Aggie coach had told his team that they would be behind until the 13th event, the 220, but, as things turned out the results of the high jump came in early and put the Aggies ahead to stay. Ben Greathouse, Mr. Consist ency all year long, did “not dis appoint anyone as he clinabed to a 6-9 mark to take the competi tion. Marvin Taylor added a sec ond with a 6-7 leap and Kim Sutton got fourth with a 6-5 jump. When the 220 did finally roll around, things were pretty well settled but just to be sure Curtis outdueled brother Marvin to the tape to tie the conference mark at 20.7. Both were caught in 20.7 and Woods clocked a 21.2, good for third. Aside from the high jump, only three Aggies placed in the field events. Larry McIntyre got a tie for fifth in the pole vault while Ronnie Lightfoot took a second in the shot and Marc Black got second in the javelin.
