Marine Corps officer selection
team which is interviewing and
testing prospective officers here
this week.
The team is operating an in
formation booth in the Memorial
Student Center through Thurs
day.

Texas A&M visit are Capt. B. E.
Bryan, S/Sgt. Thomas Phillips
and Sgt. R. L. Stephens, all of
the Marine Corps’ Austin office.
Capt. Crane said he is partic
ularly interested in explaining
the Corps’ Platoon Leaders Class
(PLC) program to freshmen and
sophomores.
The PLC program offers stu
dents an opportunity to earn a
commission upon graduation by
successfully completing two six-
week periods of summer training
at Quantico, Va.
The team also will participate
in the 7:30 meeting tonight of
the Semper Fidelis Society in
Room 146 of the Physics Build
ing. The Semper Fidelis Society
is the Corps’ national collegiate
organization.

as well as the Doctor’s caps and gowns.
The hoods are to be left at the University
Exchange Store for delivery by a repre
sentative of the Exchange Store to the
Registrar’s Office no later than 1:00 p. m.,
Tuesday, May 19. The Ph.D. or D.Ed.
hoods will not be worn in the procession,
since all such candidates will be hooded
on the stage as part of the ceremony.
Candidates for the Master’s Degree will
wear the cap and gown; ail civilian stu.
dents who are candidates for the Bachelor’s
Degree will wear the cap and gown ; ROTC
students who are candidates for the Bache
lor’s Degree will wear the appropriate
uniform. All military personnel who are
candidates for the Bachelor’s or Master’s
degree will wear the uniform ; Ph.D. or
D.Ed. candidates will wear the cap and
gowns. Ph.D. candidates will arrange for
rental of cap, gown, and hood at the Ex
change Store between 8:00 a. m., Monday,

be available on a rental basis. The Master’s
and Bachelor’s caps and gowns my be pur
chased at the Exchange Store after May 4,

To be eligible to purchase the Texas
A&M University ring, an undergraduate
student must have at least one academic
year in residence and credit for ninety-
five (96) semester hours. The hours passed
at the preliminary grade report period on
April 6, 1970, may be used in satisfying
this ninety-five hour requirement. Stu
dents qualifying under this regulation may
now leave their names with the ring
clerk. Room Seven, Richard Coke Build
ing. She, in turn, will check all records
to determine ring eligibility.
Orders for these rings will be taken
by the ring clerk starting April 20, 1970,
and continuing through May 26, 1970.
The rings will be returned to the Reg
istrar’s Office to be delivered on or
about July 10, 1970.
The ring clerk is on duty from 8:00

Funeral services for Dr.
Charles H. Winkler, 91, of 200
Lee St., College Station, will be
held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the
A&M Presbyterian Church.
The retired professor emeritus
of psychology at Texas A&M
died Sunday night in a Bryan
hospital.
The Rev. H. Bruce Fisher, pas
tor of the A&M Presbyterian
Church, will officiate at local
services and at 3 p.m. graveside
services in The Grove, Texas,
Cemetery. Hillier Funeral Home,
Bryan, has charge of arrange
ments.
Dr. Winkler was born in The
Grove on Dec. 5, 1878.
He graduated from Texas
A&M in 1901, received a master’s
degree from the University of
Texas, Austin, and the Ph.D.
from the University of Missouri.
Winkler was named dean of
A&M’s School of Vocational
Teaching in 1923, dean and head
of the Agricultural Education
Department in 1925, professor
and head of the Psychology De
partment in 1935 and director of
the Summer School in 1938.
He retired from Texas A&M
in 1946 after 23 years of active
teaching.
Dr. Winkler is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Adeline Winkler of
College Station; three sons, Dr.
Bruno O. Winkler of Sao Paulo,
Brazil, Max Winkler of New
Braunfels and Dr. Charles H.
Winkler Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.;
two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jane
McEuen of Jackson, Miss., and
Mrs. Mary Beth Walton of San
Antonio.
Also, two brothers, Fred Wink
ler of McGregor and Albert
Winkler of Davis, Calif.; one sis
ter, Miss Louise Winkler of The
Grove; 15 grandchildren, and
eight great-grandchildren.

Frank Erwin, chairman of the
board of regents, said it would be
unfair to the generation of stu
dents coming up to limit enroll
ment. He said the school recently
acquired a great deal more land
adjacent to the campus through
urban renewal and that commit
ments had been made for expan
sion.
Erwin predicted 4,000 to 5,000
students would be turned away
next September if enrollment was
frozen at 35,000.
“I certainly wouldn’t want a
situation like they have at Berke
ley, where they let in only the
top 10 per cent of the high school
class,” he said. “I think that’s
a big part of what’s wrong with
Berkeley.”
The board postponed action on
the proposal until July.
