Campus Briefs Marine Recruiter Team Visits Campus Capt. R. E. Crane heads a Marine Corps officer selection team which is interviewing and testing prospective officers here this week. The team is operating an in formation booth in the Memorial Student Center through Thurs day. Accompanying Crane on the Texas A&M visit are Capt. B. E. Bryan, S/Sgt. Thomas Phillips and Sgt. R. L. Stephens, all of the Marine Corps’ Austin office. Capt. Crane said he is partic ularly interested in explaining the Corps’ Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) program to freshmen and sophomores. The PLC program offers stu dents an opportunity to earn a commission upon graduation by successfully completing two six- week periods of summer training at Quantico, Va. The team also will participate in the 7:30 meeting tonight of the Semper Fidelis Society in Room 146 of the Physics Build ing. Winkler, 91, of 200 Lee St., College Station, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the A&M Presbyterian Church. The retired professor emeritus of psychology at Texas A&M died Sunday night in a Bryan hospital. The Rev. H. Bruce Fisher, pas tor of the A&M Presbyterian Church, will officiate at local services and at 3 p.m. graveside services in The Grove, Texas, Cemetery. Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan, has charge of arrange ments. Dr. Winkler was born in The Grove on Dec. 5, 1878. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1901, received a master’s degree from the University of Texas, Austin, and the Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. Winkler was named dean of A&M’s School of Vocational Teaching in 1923, dean and head of the Agricultural Education Department in 1925, professor and head of the Psychology De partment in 1935 and director of the Summer School in 1938. He retired from Texas A&M in 1946 after 23 years of active teaching. Dr. Winkler is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adeline Winkler of College Station; three sons, Dr. Bruno O. Winkler of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Max Winkler of New Braunfels and Dr. Charles H. Winkler Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jane McEuen of Jackson, Miss., and Mrs. Mary Beth Walton of San Antonio. Also, two brothers, Fred Wink ler of McGregor and Albert Winkler of Davis, Calif.; one sis ter, Miss Louise Winkler of The Grove; 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Frank Erwin, chairman of the board of regents, said it would be unfair to the generation of stu dents coming up to limit enroll ment. He said the school recently acquired a great deal more land adjacent to the campus through urban renewal and that commit ments had been made for expan sion. Erwin predicted 4,000 to 5,000 students would be turned away next September if enrollment was frozen at 35,000. “I certainly wouldn’t want a situation like they have at Berke ley, where they let in only the top 10 per cent of the high school class,” he said. “I think that’s a big part of what’s wrong with Berkeley.” The board postponed action on the proposal until July.
