Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, December 17, I960 THE BATTALION Chicago, Steelers Play Sunday In ‘Phipps Bowl’ NEW YORK MP)-—The Chicago Bears play Detroit and the Pitts burgh Steelers go against New Orleans Sunday in final National Football League games which have been dubbed the “Phipps Bowl." Which one — Chicago or Pitts burgh — gets Mike Phipps in the pro football draft? The question is a bit presump tuous since, while the Bears may be covetously eyeing the brilliant Purdue quarterback, there is no indication the Steelers feel the same way. What is certain is that one of these two teams, owning the poorest records in the pro game, can make the choice in the annual draft of top collegians Jan. 27-28. At the moment, the Bears and Steelers are tied with 1-12 rec ords. The worst records in the American League belong to Mi ami 3-10 and Cincinnati 4-9, elim inating them from the No. 1 pick sweepstakes. Should the Bears and Steelers remain tied after Sunday’s games, either at 1-13 or 2-12, then they would flip a coin to see who gets first choice. A vic tory for one and a loss for the other throws the dubious honor to the losers. Is this enough to cause a little fancy side-stepping in Sunday’s games, as some suggest? “Ridiculous,” said a source close to the Bears. “This team is in trouble. It has a serious mo rale problem. It needs desperate ly to win. Coach Pat Patterson’s Aggies, in team competition, remain un defeated with a 5-0 varsity mark and a 3-0 freshman record. Next action comes on Jan. 10 with a dual meet at Arlington State. Further more, the team is rent with dis- sention, with quarterback Virgil Carter having just been fined $1,000 for remarks detrimental to the coaching staff and manage ment. Carter has asked to be traded. Otherwise, he warns, he will play out his option. The Bears also are disenchanted with a second quarterback, Jack Concannon. “You can bet if the Bears get the first pick, they will choose Phipps,” a Chicago spokesman said. As second choice, the Bears would like a good tight end and are looking appreciatively at Jim Mandich, 6-4 and 230 pounds, of Michigan, and Ray Parsons, 6-4 and 240, of Minnesota. Phipps is a pro style quarter back, 6-3 and 205 pounds, who led the Boilermakers to three vic tories over Notre Dame. He passed for more than 2,500 yards and figured in 31 touchdowns last season. The Steelers’ quarterback cup board is healthier and if they should choose Phipps it would be for trading purposes only. They are high on Terry Henratty, the former Notre Dame star whoun derstudies Dick Shiner. They are anxious to add strong runner and muscle for tk offensive line. High on the Steelers’ draft lii —and the scouts have just con pleted their reports—are Stev Owens, Oklahoma’s Heisman tro phy winner; Bob Anderson, Colo rado’s 6-foot, 208-pound thundi bolt, and Jim Otis, Ohio State 214 pound fullback, all stron runners. The Steelers also are intereste in tight ends Mandich and Pai sons. They rate Dennis Shaw San Diego State and Terry Brat shaw of Louisiana Tech as qua< terbacks on par with Phipps. Also apparently heading for the playoffs are Law Hall, Mitchell Hall and Parks and Recreation. Company G-2 took its third straight freshman flag football win, defeating F-2, 8-0. The NFL announced Tuesday that Landry was fined. He was quoted in the Dallas Times Her ald as saying “in my 20 years of football that is the worst call I have ever seen. I don’t care where you were standing in the stadium, you could have seen that.” He was critical of failure by the officials to call pass inter ference against cornerback Pat Fischer of the Redskins who was covering flanker Lance Rentzel on a long pass play. “Yes, I was fined and the in cident is closed as far as I’m concerned,” Landry said. penetrations, H-2 moving into three-way tie for the lead wit|P er > 0( ^ s i 1-1 and M-l.
