Kentucky rolled to the top spot in the first regular season poll by The Associated Press, grabbing 16 first-place votes and 472 points after running up 106- 87 and 115-85 victories over West Virginia and Kansas, respec tively. But Monday night, after the poll was announced, Kentucky failed to hit the 100-mark in a 94-87 triumph over fifth-ranked North Carolina and Rupp said rather pointedly: “This was not our best game.” Whether Rupp was unhappy or not, the sportswriters and sports- casters balloting in The AP poll were impressed with Kentucky’s early season play enough to put them into the top spot by an overwhelming margin over UCLA’s defending national cham pions. The Bruins slipped into the No. 2 spot with three first-place votes and 383 points after whip ping Arizona 90-65 and edging Minnesota 72-71 in overtime. New Mexico State followed in third place with two votes for the top spot and 317 points. While Kentucky was moving up one notch from its pre-season ranking, pre-season favorite South Carolina had to settle for the No. 8 spot in the first regu lar season balloting after split ting its first two games. The Gamecocks defeated Auburn 86- 64 but lost to Tennessee 55-54. The Top Ten with first place votes in parehtheses and total points. (A 3 ) — JT King, who took over Texas Tech’s football fortunes one year after the Raiders officially entered the Southwest Conference in that sport, moved upstairs Tuesday to become athletic director. He said in a news conference that he alone will be in charge of finding a new head football coach. “I and I alone will conduct the search for a new head coach at Texas Tech,” King said. “And, being in that capacity, I am the only person who can speak officially on the matter.” In a question and answer ses sion at a news conference, King said no one had been contacted about the job, offered the job or hired. He said he has a working list of his own but does not want to “move too quickly for fear of overlooking someone who might be available.” King said he expected to com plete his search within “one to two weeks, and certainly before the end of the year.” King was appointed athletic director Tuesday at the same time Polk Robison was moved from the post to that of admin ister of finance and development for the athletic department. King had a won-lost record of 44-43-3 at Tech. The team had varying seasons under King, dropping to 1-9 in 1962, with a high mark of 8-2 in 1965. This season’s record was 5-5. The move left the Tech coach ing job wide open, stressed Retha Martin of Lubbock, chairman of the Tech regents. Tech regents met Saturday and refused to act on the renew al of King’s and Robison’s con tracts, each with one year to run. Tech’s banner year under King came in 1965 when quarterback Tom Wilson, now a Raider aide, and All-American Anderson led the Raiders to an 8-2 season and a Gator Bowl berth. Tech lost the Gator Bowl to Georgia Tech 31-21 and in 1964 lost to Georgia 7-0 in the Sun Bowl. King was named the Sen ior College Coach of the Year by Texas sports writers follow ing the 1965 season. Robison has been athletic di rector at Tech since 1960, when he guided the Raiders to their first SWC basketball champion ship and a third place finish in the NCAA regional tournament. Robison has been associated with Tech for 34 of the school’s 44 years as player, coach and administrator. m <Se/7/0/?s \ (S-RADUA tel I MAKE SURE YOUR PICTURE WILL BE IN THE 1970 AGGIELAND YEARBOOK PICTURE SCHEDULE P-Q-R — DEC. 8-DEC. 13 S-T-U —JAN. 5-JAN. 9 V-W-X-Y-Z — JAN. 12 - JAN. 16 CORPS SENIORS: Uniforms: Class A Winter — Blouse or Midnights CIVILIANS: Coat and tie.
