[{fused me,” Stallings con- led, “but my plans right now to do everything we can to Rice.” The Aggies, though they are favored by the oddsmakers this week to pluck the lowly Owls by at least ten points, have not im proved to the point of taking Rice lightly. “The thing that worries me” said Stallings, “is that they are the kind of team that is improv ing every week and to quote Bo Hagan (Rice’s coach), they are just a little away from being a good football team.” “They have several quality players, too. That Vincent (quar terback Stable) looks good to me and Davis (senior split end Lar ry) is an outstanding receiver. Steve Bradshaw and Roger Roitsch are two good defensive guards and Randy Lee and Rod rigo Barnes are good too.” The A&M mentor named sev eral players who played well against Southern Methodist, es pecially the Aggie receivers, who made some really outstanding catches. A real good passer, like Hixson (SMU’s Chuck), throws the ball before the man makes his break and the ball is there every time. That way the receiver learns to expect it in a certain area. Rocky is just not that kind of passer yet. He is a whole lot better than he was three or four weeks ago however and he’s improving every week.” Jimmy Adams, Barney Harris, and Ross Brupbacher, who are all seniors, received Stallings’ praise for their pass catching against the Mustangs with backs Marc Black, Larry Stegent, Steve Burks and Self also named for their play. Stallings was also asked if sophomore sensation Burks would possibly see more action than just the four carries he got in the SMU tilt but he declined to confirm the probability. “I think that Steve is prob ably more effective playing like he does because we have a pret ty fair runner in there ahead of him (tailback Larry Stegent). Of course, a back like Stegent is keyed on a lot by the defense and Burks gives him a rest.” “The blocking in the offensive line is getting better,” Stallings continued. “Randy Maddox and Andy Philley both blocked pretty well,” Mike DeNiro headed the list of defensive players named by the Aggie coach for their play Saturday. “DeNiro played well and Steve Luebbehusen played pretty well,” he said. “Those up front graded well, probably better than the others with the exception of Dave Elmendorf, who always plays well.” The injury situation for Satur day’s clash with the Owls shapes as the best that it has been all season with only defensive end Jim Piper and linebacker Buster Adami coming out of the SMU game with aches, both with sore shoulders. wm j .1 I ■ OFFICIAL NOTICE of Student Pu ices must arrive in the Office ibiications before deadline of Official notices must arrive in th ' Student Publications before deadline I p.m. of the day proceeding publicati ion. (Open Sundays (1:00 to 6:00) 704 Texas Ave. 823-8709 SUPER SOPH Steve Burks, the meteoric sophomore from Dumas, was the Ag-gfes’ leading rusher Saturday with an even 100 yards on only four carries. The 5-10, 170-pounder now has 213 yards on 30 carries for a seasonal average of 7.1 per carry. Player of the Week Defensive end Mike DeNiro is the Batt’s Player Of The Week for the second time this year. The 6-0, 200-pound junior looked more like a back for SMU Saturday because he spent so much time in the Pony backfield harrassing quarterback Chuck Hixson. Arkansas Coach Frank Broyles says, “DeNiro is not only a strong and talented defensive player but he’s also a great competitor.” DeNiro was an all-city, all-state, and All-America end at Chaney High School in Youngstown, Ohio and was also an all-star baseballer and all-city guard in basketball. SMU fullback Daryl Doggett said after Saturday’s game, “I can tell you there was a lot of hitting going on out there. I think DeNiro hit best. He’s the best end in the league.” Specifically in the SMU game, he forced Gary Hammond into a 13-yard loss on a reverse, dumped Hixson for a 14-yard loss from the Aggie seven to the 21 on third down, and hit Hixson on a pass attempt on the Aggie five in the fourth quarter allowing Steve Luebbehusen to intercept the pass in the end zone. Last season, DeNiro impressed the experts with his play enough that he was voted to the All-SWC team and Defensive Player Of The Year. Rice assistant coach Jim Hess says, “DeNiro is a big play maker. If anyone’s going to drop the passer or ball carrier for a loss it’s probably going to be DeNiro.” Read Classifieds Daily BUSIER AGENCY REAL ESTATE • INSURANCE F.H.A.—Veterans and Conventional Loans ARM & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texas Ave. (in Ridgecrest) 846-3708 \ CANON ELECTRONICS presents a showing of the latest and most complete selection of Electronic Printing Calculators You are invited to Holiday Inn Friday, November the fourteenth from 9:30 until 12:00 a. m.
