' v.' V •■■■ • -v>■ • :ober 17, 196S Cafeteria s le sd jel, a n :o 22, Off The Record by Gary McDonald HE BAND — The Band The first album from the and, Music from Big Pink, was reeled by a prodigious amount f critical acclaim, but its com- lercial results were not quite proportion to the critical re- lits. So in hopes of alleviating le commercial problem, Capitol Records is putting forth a huge advertising campaign for this, The Band’s second album. And it deserves it. For music, lyrics, execution, density of substance, and sheer pleasure, it is inexor ably one of the if not the best album of the year. Jazz virtuoso, Dizzy Gillespie, once said that it took him twenty years to learn what to leave out. Through long years on the road playing one nighters with Ron nie Hawkins, The Band has mas tered that art. The extraneous is not to be found in their music. Each of the multi-instrumental ists in the group play economi cally and tastefully. Contrast, for example, the typical mercury fingered show-off present in most albums in the pop main stream to Robbie Robertson, Band lead guitarist whose style is more akin to the tasteful play ing of Steve Cropper, lead guitarist for Booker T. and the M.G.’s and Stax session man. The Band as an ensemble forms a complementary synthesis of rock and country, spiced with other assorted styles, but never superflously.
