McCoy, commandant. There are 121 cadets studying under Army scholarships this (Continued from page 1) in mobile home parks at that time, 82 per cent were students. “The rapid increase in the number of spaces being provided for mobile homes in the last two years in this area indicates that an apparent need exists. This is also evident in the number of parks having no vacancy,” the report found. The study further revealed that a lack of listings in the telephone directory and lack of advertise ments in news media “indicated they (the mobile home park oper ators) do not have to seek cus tomers. The study concluded that fur ther inquiry needed to be made into the possibility of renting mo bile homes to students. “It must be remembered, “the report warned, “that the low- priced (apartments) units which are available are certainly not reserved for university students. New families moving into Bryan year, a 34 per cent increase over last fall. McCoy noted the uni versity had a 58 scholarship ca det enrollment in 1967-68. Texas leads all states in num ber of high school graduates or College Station are also look ing for the same rental hous ing.” Where does the university stand on this issue ? “It is the official policy of Texas A&M to depend primarily upoi> the private sector of Bryan and College Station to provide the major portion of housing for married students,” the report said. Developers who are reluctant to provide housing might be en couraged to build if there were closer communications between the university and the communi ties, the study added. Howard Vestal, director of management services, said today that the university had a “tacit” agreement with private builders that the institution would not build housing units for married students so long as the demand was met by private enterprise. He added that he personally knew of no one at the university awarded four-year ROTC grants and of this number, 39—or about two-thirds—are A&M freshmen. “The Army is awarding more scholarships each year,” McCoy said, “and Texas A&M is getting who was dissatisfied with the number of units private builders had constructed. “And I personally know of no case in which a student could not come to this school because he couldn’t find a place to live,” Vestal said. The report suggested that the university’s housing policy ought to be “reviewed in depth” and “changed substantially, if not to tally.” “It must be remmebered that growth in student population at this university is limited to the number which can be adequately housed either by the university or by the community. The current limits of both sources have been reached and there is literally no where else to live,” the report said. The 1970 National Airlines Open golf tournament will be held at the Country Club of Miami next March 26-29. its share.” The 121 Army scholarship ca dets include 20 new two-year awards made to upperclassmen this fall. Even in this category, there is an increase over the number of 1968-69 two-year grants awarded. The Military Science Depart ment screens two-year grant candidates and makes the award, with Department of the Army approval. Four-year scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to high school students before they enroll in college. The grant can be used by the student at any of the 270 colleges and universi ties offering the four-year Army ROTC program. “It is significant that A&M enrolls these students from all over the country,” McCoy said. Each scholarship pays for tui tion, textbooks, lab fees and pro vides a $50 per month subsist ence allowance. If the subsist ence is applied to room and board, most scholarship cadets can just about break even financially, spokesman for the commandant’s office pointed out. Upon graduation and success ful completion of the Army ROTC program, scholarship ca dets are commissioned second lieutenants in the Regular and U. S. Army Reserve and serve at least four years active duty. Varner & Sons Jewelers North Gate 846-5816 An experimental fire truck that pumped an average 2,350 gallons per minute in tests has been received at A&M’s Firemen Training School. The $34,000 unit was delivered Thursday by Dean Hoover, project engineer for the John Bean Divi sion of FMC Corp., Tipton, Ind. It will be used by the school for research at A&M and on-the- job at various cities throughout Texas. Chief Instructor Henry D. Smith and his staff wrote the specifications. Funds for the only-one-of-its-kind pumper were appropriated by the Texas Legis lature to the fire school, part of the Texas Engineering Extension Service. Smith’s staff worked two years writing the specifications. They think the pumper will be the answer to the growing prob lem of getting a lot of water to a fire where there is a minimum of manpower, trucks or water sources. Instructor John R. Rauch ex plained this is a real factor in big cities where residential and commercial areas are growing faster than the city utility lines. One man can operate the pumper, which has the capability of producing as many gallons per minute as three average fire trucks, Rauch pointed out. Instead of the normal 2 1 /i-inch intake and outlet, the A&M pumper has a 6-inch intake and 6-inch outlet feeding a 6-inch hose. The hose feeds a manifold that will distribute the water to eight hand lines. The manifold is currently being designed by the Firemen Train ing School staff. It will be mounted on a platform at the rear of the truck and can be dropped off at the scene of the fire. The pumper will then go to the fire hydrant and Rauch estimated it would be effective at least a half-mile from the manifold. Hoover said the pumper re ceived a 1,750 gallons per minute rating by the Underwriters Laboratory, which tested the truck at Tipton. Most modern fire trucks pump a maximum of 750 gpm, Rauch noted. One problem encountered in the design was that no U. S. firms manufactured 6-inch flexible hose. However, it is now available from an East Coast distributor. The truck is 26 feet long, nine feet high, eight feed wide and weighs 31,250 pounds, less equip ment. It is powered by a 350 horsepower V-8 diesel engine manufactured by Detroit Diesel, and it has full power steering.
